I realize that many of you have already gone off on your vacations, or
are just about to, but there's two things I'd like to ask you to do
before shutting down your computer today.
As you probably know, Wal-Mart has the distinction of being both the
world's largest employer and one of the worst. It busts unions,
exploits immigrant workers, uses sweatshops around the world,
discriminates against women -- and those are the NICE things we can say
about it.
Really, the CEO of this company, Mr. H. Lee Scott, needs a good
talking-to. He needs to be sent a very clear message this holiday
season.
Thanks to the efforts of two groups, one in Canada, one in the USA, you
can help send him that message.
First, go to this address:
http://www.workingforchange.com/activism/p...16041&ms=dis007 (http://www.workingforchange.com/activism/petition.cfm?itemid=16041&ms=dis007)
Tell Mr. Scott that you pledge not to shop at Wal-Mart, and to tell all
your friends, "Don't buy me Wal-Mart for the holidays!" The actual
message is brief and to the point, and says you're not shopping at
Wal-Mart until the chain:
* Pays its one million workers a living wage
* Provides affordable health insurance to its employees
* Stops discriminating against women
* Stops attacking employees who want to be represented by a union
* Ceases forcing unpaid overtime on its employees
* Stops pressuring suppliers to lower their labor costs.
This campaign is aiming to get 100,000 messages off to Mr. Scott and so
far they're below 42,000. We can do our bit and help them reach the
target.
Then, go here:

The 'send a lump of coal to Wal-Mart' is an initiative of the
Canada-based Maquila Solidarity Network. Its message to Mr. Scott is
even more to the point, and reads simply:
"Even Scrooge changed his ways. You can too. Stop exploiting the
workers
who make and sell your products. Please respect their rights in 2004."
After you've done both those things, and only after you've done them,
go
join your family and have a very wonderful holiday season.
I want to take this opportunity to wish all LabourStart's readers a
happy Channukah, a merry Christmas, a happy Kwanzaa, and a happy New
Year.
