I've read Parenti but is there another author out who writes or speaks about cultural hegemony abs intellectual influence from a modern perspective. Gramsci is still relevant but I need help connecting the dots to how it's relevant today.

There are many works within cultural studies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_studies) that attempt to apply or adapt the theory of hegemony to modern life.

There's also a good article by the late Chris Harman that attempts to separate the "revolutionary Gramsci" from the "reformist Gramsci" of EuroCommunism, which you can find here (http://www.isj.org.uk/?id=239).
