View Full Version : Conflict in Classless society

This post is the result of a realisation that came to me while thinking about the shape of post-capitlaist society;
What are revolutionary territories going to do about nuclear powers? What sort of conflicts are we to expect once the whole world is communist?
A possible answer to number one is for the revolutionary territories to hold on to their nuclear weapons, so that if the cappies are crazy enought to lob something nuclear in our direction, we can toss something back and not simply be eliminated.
Number two is more difficult. Assuming religious and racial differences are forgotten, what is to stop two groups of equals fighting each other?
What is to stop several different communes fighting over one resource?
I hope you can help comrades, as these question worry me.

In answer to question one, as much as it seems bad I would hold on to nuclear weapons as long as they are in the hands of capitalists powers, simply as a deterrent to agression. I would do so because without such a deterrent we would be powerless against the capitalists who undoubtledly will have them and conventional war would very much harm a socialist or communist society rather than benefiting as it can do to capitalists. I would focus on defence and try not to be antagonistic to the nuclear powers.
As for question 2, I would like to imagine that people would be selfless enough to realise that competing to benefit in the short term is damaging to society. Having said that It may be necessary to have some kind of clout to stop activities, the issue here would be that if control of any internal policing is centralized then that small group in control may try to do themselves exactly what they should be trying to stop.

The answer to the first question is indeed the obvious one; hold on to your nukes until you're sure the cappies don't have any...then dismantle them.
The second is trickier. Why would people want to fight one another in classless society?
Would there be a material basis for armed conflict and, if so, what would it be?
The only thing that's ever occurred to me is the possibility that some "charismatic" figure might arise and attempt to restore some form of proto-despotism (possibly based on a "new religion"...) within a particular commune. I simply have no idea how likely an occurrence that would be...but if it happened, I think other communes would unite to suppress that by force.
We know that humans, being humans, will always find things to squabble over. But I find it difficult to imagine that anything would be so serious as to raise the possibility of armed struggle...unless it would be some kind of attempt to restore class society.
That might be a very "low-probability" event...but it would be foolish to assume that it could "never" happen.
