I used to read the Starry Plough regularly. All I have heard is that support work for prisoners is still going on.

The Starry Plough? Yeah I read it from time to time... though really I don't live in Ireland so I don't have much right to speak (but I am very interested in the Irish struggle).

republican... as in anti-monarchist, anti-loyalist. republican as in supporting the establishing of a republic. like the US did in the revolution (then gradually got rid of it).

it's a good thing.

one more thing, if you look back at america's political history, the republicans were actually the left-wingers for a while, then there was a period of absolute apathy and zero voter turn-out, and both parties switched sides.

To be perfectly honest, I hadn't heard of them until you brought it up. They seem legitimate enough, though. I even signed the segregation petition.

I'm pretty sure the IRSP is the political wing of the INLA (Irish National Liberation Army) were an actual split from Sinn Fein and the IRA and are about as socialist as Sinn Fein. Remember there's a difference between party policies and party actions, much like the actions of the CPs worldwide compared to their actual political policies.
It's also a well known fact that the INLA are heavily involved in criminal activity (fraud, drug dealing, extortion; to name a few), so I'd be careful about supporting them or anything they do.

In relation as to whether, republican socialist is an oxymoron, I don't think so as the left should support the right to self-determination of any people and the right to support their culture but it's a matter as to what basis, a republic is established on, such as whether its to establish a homegrown capitalist class or whether its to be a racist republic and a breed of racist nationalism which emphasises national identity over class identity. In many cases, so called republican socialists are more concerned about national identity than class issues and have no real plans to establish a socialist nation but merely talk about socialist issues in order to gain support.

Agreed. People have to remember not to think of political parties in terms of the Amerikkkan socio-political landscape. The word republican does not mean the same thing in Ireland that it does in the U$.
