New thread for non-political discussion (bet you saw that coming)...
Onwards with the silly. This is what I heard from a Facebook friend...
"So, an atheist communist dies, and the devil and god make a deal to switch off with him each year. After the first year, the devil goes up to God and says "Ok my year is up god, please take this man now! He has turned all my deamons into pioneers" So god takes him. Another year goes by and the devil goes up to God and says "My dearly beloved God, it is my turn to take him" and God replies "First of all, I am comrade God. Second of all, there is no god, and finally, dont distract me or I will be late for the party meeting today"

That is what my novel is about, only it has gay aspects in it for the character. Is going to be quite the project.I estimate that the total amount of pages will be around 300-350.I am accustomed to writing novellas of 15-20 pages and even then it takes me forever to finish those. So this will really test my limits and be the "breaking point" to where I shed this short story phase and throw myself into what I have always wanted to do-write novels.
Will give constant updates. lol

well I'd love to read it when you have a substantial amount written. Mine would definitely be about teenage struggles with handling high school/society from a communist/youth perspective and struggles with sexuality, relationships and drugs/drinking. Good luck with it!

The Communist Tendency Candy-Store: A boy named revolution walks into the town's new candy store, the Communist Tendency. He is immediately impressed by the seemingly never ending rows of sweets so in desperation he asks the proprietor, an old man named Proletarian, which candy is best. "Well," Proletarian says, "Each have their charms. See this candy," he says pointing to a box labeled 'Leninism,' "Has a very structured and disciplined taste. First candy we ever got." So Revolution picks up one and pops it in his mouth. After a while, however, the taste goes sour. "Ah yes, you are noticing the aftertaste. Though Leninism is good most people notice that the lingering taste, Stalinism, is not for them. Perhaps try something different?" So they walk down the isle once more in search of candy. They stop abruptly at a box labeled Trotskyism. The boy puts one in his mouth. After a while he says,"It tastes good but it keeps on changing tastes... too many flavors piled into one." And spits it out. So they move on to yet a different box. This time it is Revolution who stops and points at a empty box labeled Anarchism. He asks why it is empty. To this Proletarian says," Well, Anarchism is more of an idea than a specific candy. It hates authority so it wouldn't conform to the trynnany of matter." Finally Revolution gives up and says, "I can't decide, which one should I get to have a good day?" To this Proletarian responds with, "Just do what I do-get them all!"

Busy month for me October will be: in a couple of days I have this anti-drone event and then on the 20th I am slated to attend a "coming out" party for the launching of a new youth organization in my state. Around the time of the party there is also this Queer organizing summit but due to transportation problems I probably won't be able to attend ( :( ).

Speaking of activity this coming Saturday is going to be a busy day, to say the least. First things first, I have found a ride to the Maine Queer Trans Youth Summit and will be engaged in that from early in the morning to late in the afternoon. Then once the summit is done I will be heading over to the "coming out" party for the Pine Tree Youth Organization. Figured it would be a good event to go to since it is in the same general location as the first and because I am always looking for more chances to hawk my talents and name. Probably won't be home until 9:30pm (give or take). Looks like I am walking again.

The moment a synthesised voice is an instrument... They sound like shit, that's what is wrong with them. They are only revelled because of the porn and the fanart, the little moéblobs attached to the noise; no one can seriously listen to these fucking things and find their obnoxious noises pleasant.

That is your opinion and you are entitled to it. you should know, that as an instrument, the sound completely depends on the users utilization of it.

You are very ignorant of just how Vocaloid became popular, it started with nnd and exploded from there. Pornographic art of them happened after they become popular. It may shock you, but people actually like the music irregardless of the image. The software immense success is a testament to that. There are now Korean and Chinese voicebanks and a Spanish one is in the works.
You are also using "moé" incorrectly.

I saw Django Unchained the other day. It was a decent flick, except it kinda falls apart in the last act. Personally; I prefer Tarantino's earlier stuff; like Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, or even Natural Born Killers, or True Romance, which he wrote, but didn't direct.

Oliver Stone directed Natural Born Killers, but Tarantino wrote the original screenplay, just like True Romance, which was directed by Tony Scott. Reservoir Dogs was the first picture that Tarantino wrote and directed.

I also am very fond to point out that their founding fathers were a bunch of xenophobic ass hats who were perfectly free in Holland but moved away because their kids did such unspeakably evil things like...you know...actually integrate in Dutch society and started to learn Dutch and started dating Dutch people (basically everything the Patriots say 'Murica is all about).

I used some offensive language to describe immigrants who undercut established wages (specifically use of the word scab), though I said at the time, and have certainly evolved moreso on the issue (with a thank you to Jimmy Higgins and other posters who have analyzed the subject in depth) and today I would never use the language I did then. The use of exploiting immigrant workers to keep wages down must be opposed on all fronts, and I firmly believe that the way to do this is by having open borders for workers. The reaction of right wing populists in the US and EU to further limit immigration and close borders is terrible, especially as the low wages paid to migrants prop up the profits of the owners of the property who use the threat of deportation to stop worker organization.
Though I feel this issue should not solely make me restricted, I don't feel 100% comfortable asking to be unrestricted because I'm, um....not exactly a civilian at the moment....and this might, um....restrict my status as a "revolutionary leftist"....for now.

I feel like Jurgen Klinnsman is saying that we have no chance at this world cup so it'd be a mistake to pick a roster that isn't geared for 4 years from now. I feel I can appreciate his honesty and vision but also am quite disappointed that that is, indeed, the reality.
But hey you never know.
edit When I wrote this I was referring to Landon Donavan being kept off the WC roster but this seems pretty dumb of me to say now that Klinnsman has literally come out and said we have no chance at this world cup and we are building for the future.

Anyone here remember a few years back when FIFA awarded the 2022 World Cup to Qatar and I pointed out that was fucking stupid? (I actually, to my embarrassment, used much nicer language). Then those FIFA apologists descended upon me with their arguments like "We've never had a game in a country that small where the summer weather is regularly above 40c/110f."
Well well well.
The only question now is what's worse, the slave labor being used to construct the stadiums or the buckets of money being used to pay off FIFA officials before the vote?
Kind of like, what's going to be more entertaining in Brazil: Watching the teams battle it out on the field or watching the police battle Brazil's poor outside the stadiums?
Either way the drama will be gripping, no doubt about it. Just remember when you're getting mugged don't scream.
(obviously that is meant to be some dark humor. I normally wouldn't make that disclaimer but on this site...)

To all those people who thought and predicted Miami would truck over San Antonio in 4 or 5 games, you are a joke. But not as big of a joke as the Eastern Conference is in comparison to the war of attrition that exists out West.
Newsflash Miami: You are no longer playing the fucking Pacers. You are no longer playing a team you can not beat based on athleticism and raw talent alone. You are not playing a team that gets intimidated. Ever.
http://giant.gfycat.com/MintyGroundedDunnart.gif
Goddamn. That is beautiful. Artistry. Why the Spurs are the biggest challenge the Heat has had all season.
Not saying Miami does not have a good chance to win, just that all those who predicted they'd make short work of the Spurs are mostly the type of people who have no fucking idea what they're talking about. The type of people who watch Lebron roll over the Bobcats/Nets/Pacers and go to sleep before watching San Antonio beat teams like Dallas/Portland/OKC--- AKA Teams clearly superior to ANY competition the Heat faced in the East.
Not that the Spurs are going to shoot 75%+ in a half (or anyone else will again, either), but you have to give them credit. They gave away Game 2, Game 3 they came out swinging. Like a champ.

SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL—With only hours to go before Thursday’s opening match between Brazil and Croatia, sources confirmed that FIFA officials managed to hammer out the winner of the World Cup just in time for the tournament. “It was a close call, but we finally ironed out which country will win the World Cup on July 13,” FIFA president Sepp Blatter told reporters, emphasizing that while he and his colleagues had procrastinated in fixing the results of all 64 matches, the tournament organizers, referees, and the coaches and players from every team are “fully on board” with the predetermined outcomes following extensive negotiations. “I can’t reveal too much right now, but I can assure you that this tournament is going to feature huge upsets, thrilling stoppage time goals, and more than a few surprises for the fans. It’s going to be a wonderful World Cup.” Blatter added that he was eager to avoid a repeat of the 2010 World Cup, in which several matches were played without a winner having been previously determined, resulting in hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost bribes

Jesus Christ why does every documentary in the fucking english language that covers europe from the middle ages on have to be made solely from the english perspective?
Tiny England daring to challenge the might of Valois France...small defenseless England taking on the whole of the spanish armada...England alone standing against the domination of the continent by Bonaparte...England again alone again with the war machine across the channel....
For fucks sake I'm going to have to start watching programs with subtitles. Sat down for a lazy sunday watching a doc about the 100 years war and plague and all the good old 14th century and the level of bias and lack of balance is nauseating. Not even an attempt to describe what was going on in France at the time. Or that, you know, tiny poor little England wasn't a nation in the modern sense and the english nobility controlled quite a bit of what's now france.
Almost every historical english language documentary is like a propaganda piece for glorious english history. You would think here in the states they could make one that's a bit objective but here the only ones that get any damn funding are either covering WWII (often done with "new info" or whatever (and absolutely zero Russians interestingly enough, but plenty of opinions on the eastern front, which is treated as a sideshow)) or the 1960s civil rights movement. And that's literally fucking it.
Well there is ken burns too, I'll give pbs that.

As of 2014 Americans have acknowledged that soccer is actually a sport, and actually quite exciting. Who knew?
In my casual observation it has gone like this:
Phase 1:
Wow, all these games are actually kind of exciting. And we beat that African country. Nice. And that Argentine guy? Damn, put it in perspective and it makes some sense what all the fuss is about.
Phase 2:
Wow, this sport requires some kind of emotional attachment you just don't seem to get in many of our sports. The fact that there are no commercial breaks and the play is always moving might have something to do with this. 90 minutes, no commercials. Hmmm. And damn, we gave up the tying goal to Portugal with 15 fucking seconds left in fucking stoppage time like ages ago and I still feel shitty about it. Interesting.
Phase 3:
Wow, I have literally no fucking clue or comprehension of the strategy and intricacies that go into this game. But damn Mexico, that sucks. I may not know a lot, but I know that really fucking sucks.
We will see how the development goes from here.

I feel now like I am the single American who got turned on to the game of soccer and has continued to watch MLS here in the states.
Case in point:
Yesterday, at the bar, with a break in baseball for the all star game, there was the NBA Summer League (a league played by prospects hoping to make the team in front of empty stadiums) and the ESPYs (an award show for sports). When I suggest we change it to a game that actually matters I was told that the basketball game had some viewers in the bar (true) and that people cared more about the ESPYs than soccer.
Ok. The ESPYs. An award show for athletes. Like the Oscars. Except for the fact that the Oscars is recognition for performance in movies, and, like BAFTAs and Golden Globes and what not, its the only recognition for many films which aren't aimed at the box office solely (like Marvel). But for athletes, there is no need for an award show. The award comes from your craft. It's called WINNING. Things like MVP and all are nice but lifting the trophy at the end is what matters.
Also the award show was on mute. No subtitles even. Just wasted TV space.
On another note, I feel like MLS takes all the wrong things from abroad (like the names: FC Dallas, Sporting KC, DC United, Real Salt Lake. Real Salt Lake? Sounders, Timbers, Whitecaps-- those are decent though) but doesn't incorporate the cool things (like schedule, the league format vice playoff system, relegation). It's as though they are building a US styled top-down league but putting superficial things on it (names) to make it seem like an authentic product.

The only place I've seen anyone actually care about soccer is in Pennsylvania. I've been in a lot of US bars but only in Philly, Scranton, and (from what I hear) Pittsburgh do people actually go to bars to watch MLS.

I quite like MLS, actually. In case anybody cares. Though I'd never tolerate all the weird American stuff if it were like that over here, like draft picks and the playoffs and the word 'roster.' Fine as some kind of quirky variation on the real world, yes, but you really don't need to share it with us :)

I've seen quite a bit of support in the Pacific Northwest, at least, on the US side (never been to Vancouver when a game was on).
Either home or away there is a lot of support and many bars are packed with fans in both Portland (happy fun "woo hoo go timbers let's get drunk" crowd) and Seattle (angry serious eyes glued on tv "no excuse for losing" crowd).

Also, at this time AS Roma is playing Liverpool FC at Fenway Park.
Knowing very little about Liverpool other than that the Fenway Faithful are cheering for them, I can never root for Liverpool. Ever. Upon further investigation it turns out the same group (New England Sports Ventures) owns both. Noted. I did not know Liverpool was in New England.
But it is really cool, aside from the fact that nobody in the crowd seems to be making any noise. Like, it's completely silent. Like, what the fuck are you doing for 90 minutes Boston, especially in a currently 0-0 game?

First of all, my condolences.
I strongly dislike the Boston Red Sox, who are a dominant big market baseball team here who I really don't care for. The ownership of both teams is the same, and the Red Sox fans were pulling for them. The Red Sox have spent hundreds of millions to become champions, are on the national TV circuit all the fucking time, have fans all over the country who are "fans" but don't really follow the team, and are treated like one of those special teams (The History, The Honor, The Tradition!etc etc). Never mind that they were horrible until they started buying their wins. Also Boston Patriots, Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics are all Boston teams that suck (metaphorically...some are quite good) and by association I was making a joke about Liverpool.
Phew, Anyways...
It was a joke. I have nothing against Liverpool nor their fans (who I fully realize pre date the current ownership group) and wish them well.
edit Oh before I forget we're getting that NYCFC next year...A mix of Man City and the New York Yankees...Russian Billionaires and American Autocracy....I'm going to be sick.
On another note, now that I've ended any and all chance of being unrestricted, I would like to say I really wish I could post in the sports subforum. I know, I know, I could post about sports all over the internet but it's different doing so with people you've debated and have a rapport with. Oh well. I suppose the truly unfortunate thing is I like this political forum more than any other. Oh well.

Turkish Airways is the cheapest airfare (at the moment) from Houston to Barcelona and back on the days I have some time off. It's a 30 hour flight with a stop in Istanbul and runs for $795. But if you buy your ticket for Istanbul, at 11 hours each way, it's $836.
Go figure.

^That's weird. That's also a lot of suffering to get to Europe. What about another city + train? (Also, I prefer my layovers in Amsterdam ;) though one time I almost fell asleep waiting for my connecting flight.)
TheCultofAbeLincoln
3rd September 2014, 01:08
That is a very good idea. I actually like riding trains quite a bit. Not that I go out of my way necessarily but they are probably my favorite mode of transportation. I hear Europe is good at that also.
argeiphontes
7th September 2014, 03:38
Yeah, they're my favorite too. I've mostly been on trains in Eastern Europe. The old "communist" era trains were great. 8 seats to a compartment in 2nd class, 6 in first, and first only cost a little more than 2nd. They were comfortable and reclined. You could meet people.
Last train I took (Budapest to Warsaw) was a 2nd-class InterCity with uncomfortable plastic-feeling seats in an open car where you could see everybody. The A/C was on going through the mountains and it was damn cold. (The old cars let you adjust the climate control per compartment).
Anyway, I love trains. I've taken Amtrak a lot, and the trains in Europe are much better. (And faster, and on time...)
TheCultofAbeLincoln
10th September 2014, 21:31
I like Amtrak, and try to give them the benefit of the doubt for the plethora of issues they face. They seem like they're in the same boat as USPS: A "Private Corporation" that has to answer to all kinds of stupid demands made by congress but is at the same time blamed when they need more investment. Big difference is the USPS could probably turn a profit if they were allowed to, while Amtrak isn't going to make any more money than an interstate. But that's not the point and an entirely incorrect metric for measuring success...needless to say the Unions will be blamed for all problems. Coupled with some bullshit about how much Americans love having no options in transport and enjoy spending a large % of our income on gas for any type of travel from one congested city with a dead center to the next
Sad thing is unless you're in the Northeast, the Chicago Hub, or California, rail transit on an inter-city basis is really only viable as a vacation or an alternative to flying for those with days to spare (and who don't mind either doling out the same cost as airfare or sitting in a chair for a couple days. The views are spectacular though).
I know they may be a bit more uncomfortable and pricey, but when going to Europe I definitely aim to take a train that hits top US speeds while just stretching the legs.
edit Oh and I'll give the Pacific NW some props with that Cascades service between Oregon and Vancouver. It has a long way to go, but I give them props for trying. And when I say "trying" it largely entails taking the federal money that was set aside for projects in Wisconsin, Florida, and Ohio but was turned down by the tea partiers in power. But I suppose a Columbus resident knows more about that than myself...

I am very glad I am not in the persian gulf helping to launch planes at people like last year. Fuck all that. It's literally hot as fuck in the plant. Especially that fucking reactor room. 110 degrees or hotter everywhere. 80% humidity. Fucking awesome.
The steam rises off the gulf like in a sauna. A steam vapor fog. Horrible shit to steam through. I am so glad my current job will never go out to sea. Sleepless monotony punctuated by the Captain (who was quite a nice guy) informing us that planes that had left with 4 bombs had returned with 1 a piece and that they got some dudes. Hallelujah.

Lets see, I remember most of the prolific capitalist apologists here.
You had
Havet: The reasonable one that actually respected rationality, and followed logic
Bud Struggle: The proudly ignorant one that trolled and every argument he gave was torn up untill all he had was "well we're winning"
Lt Ferret: Who seamed like juts an angry guy with some sort of disdain for people
Rothberg: Mr. Goldstandard who argued that if there was a trace of ANYTHING government it MUST be the cause of any failure in capitalism.
Baseball: The one trick pony with the trick that never worked, i.e. "you can't lay out a perfect flawless system that I can't find some hypothetical defeater."
Trivas: The guy who sounded like he read Hagel, Wittenssomething (I forget his name the guy whos philosophy is basically unintelligable), and the existentialists while taking magic mushrooms and.
And then Skooma, but I forget what his thing was.

I'm really getting into vegan dark chocolate but I'm almost certain that I respond negatively to the caffeine in it. I have insomnia on the days I eat it, I feel like shit when I wake up in the middle of the night and my body seems to jerk and tremble, I have anxiety soon after I eat it, a few hours later I'll be irritable and/or anxious and I'm generally more 'sensitive' and down than usual. But I don't want to stop eating it because it tastes great, it goes well with green tea (which also has caffeine but I take the decaffeinated version which only has very small amounts). I went so long without junk food I thought maybe my body had to readjust (I didn't know if it was the refined sugar/carbohydrates or the chocolate but I'm assuming the latter, hopefully not both). After all, I ate chocolate and sugar all the time when I was younger.
Even now my hands almost shake when I try to move the mouse and I do, indeed, feel like shit. Maybe I'm just tired and pissed off about that horrible incident regarding my computer maliciously erasing one of my posts before I could submit it. In general I need a hug.
