View Full Version : Question About Lenin's Selected Works

So, I bought Lenin's Selected Works a while back before I realized that they were free online :blushing: and I had a couple questions.
When I was looking through the contents I noticed that Development of Capitalism in Russia is missing from volume 1 where it supposedly is to be according to the free-version. I also noticed extra writings where they weren't in the online version. I know that it was published by the Soviet Union so I was wondering, did the Soviet Union censor Lenin's work when they published this for foreign countries? If so, besides leaving out writings, did they censor things they allowed in the writings?
Thanks.

Yeah, we would need some more details to go on: the publisher, edition, number of pages, where you obtained it... however much you can give.

"Selected Works" didn't give you the clue that they might not all be there?
There's no reason one publisher's 'Selected Works' are going to be the same as another's. Each editor/editorial board will make their own decisions about what to include. There's no standard text of 'Selected Works'.

That's the free online version of what is supposed to be (and extremely close) to the same thing I bought. It is from Progress Publisher's which was Moscow's publishing wing. I believe I have the third edition.

The free version online and the one I bought is from the same publisher so this is irrelevant.

If they're different editions they'll still have been re-editted.
If the online edition is the third edition too, then there's no reason for them to be different. If it isn't, there's no reason for them to be the same.

I don't think your book is censored. Finnish version of Lenin's Selected Works (in 10 volumes) was printed in the Soviet Union in late 70's and the Vol 1 includes the Development of Capitalism in Russia.
There's just many versions of Selected Works with different amount of volumes.
Edit. Sorry, I was wrong. The Vol 1 I was talking about does not include the full text, but only the first chapter ("The Theoretical Mistakes of the Narodnik Economists").
