Am I the only on who thinks that the British Labour Party, once seen as the "working class party" is becoming more and more right wing? I live in Scotland, and the situation here appears to be that:

a) The vote of the working class, which traditionally belonged to Labour, is now being given to the Scottish Socialist Party.

b) Scottish Trade Unions, who also supported Labour, are considering giving support to the Socialists.

c) The war in Iraq especially created a new movement of public oppinion to the left-wing parties.

I am pleased to say that, here at least, there appears to be growing support for Socialism (and also I think, a decline in support for nationalism). Is this being reflected in anyone else's homeland?

im from new york usa and well i wish i could say the same as u, but unfortunately, nationalism is thru the roof, right wings are galavanting thru the streets screaming for war and if anyone ever argues them they always point to the vacant spot in the sky-line, and u can't argue back without being shot 7 times, we were getting more and more liberal and swaying to socialism and then....well we all know the story.
fucking nationalist cowboys

Geng,
I think that you should be slightly cautious when refering to Labour as a former workers party. Even Lenin said it was always a "bourgeois-workers party" ie led by bourgeois, members are workers, and situation is still the same now.

However, what should we do? Our strategy as marxists is to be where the workers are, and at the moment they are in the Labour Party along with the Trade Unions, therefor we also should be there working for marxism in their, using the Labour vehicle for our purposes for the eventual overthrow of capitalism. If we get positions of MP in parliament, we can use it as a platform for revolution.

I agree left wing parties are our vehicle. Recent trends have made our positions more digestible. Capitalists have been preying apon their ignorance, it is time we monopolize on their sense of right and wrong.

Here in Canada our ruling (fencesitting) party has just been takin overr by a conservative in Liberal clothing. This has pushed our Most popular left wing party ahead of the Conservatives in the polls. if it holds they can be the official opposition which would hopefully make a difference althouhg we've never had a left wing gov't.

well, it looks like even the green party is thinking like I do :)
