Since Revleft needs more and more money to operate as the community grows, the methods for ads are getting more pervasive. Now, blocking these ads seem unfair, but the BA have on multiple occasions indicated that this matter little to none for income revenue.
So, I thought to start this thread to let new and unexperienced web users know about ways to blocks such ads.
In Google Chrome there are basically just two ads you need:
- AdBlock (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/gighmmpiobklfepjocnamgkkbiglidom?utm_source=chrome-ntp-icon): Blocks most ads. Very versatile tool that can also block parts of the page you don care about, such as the Facebook or Twitter links at the top of each thread).
- NotScript (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/notscript?utm_source=chrome-ntp-icon): Blocks the text ads that have recently been introduced. Note: This blocks most javascript and as such creates limitations in your browsing experience. For example, the buttons in the new post page no longer work (if you know the BB code, this is no big issue) and the Thanks button reloads the page. If you can live with these limitations, this is your extension.
If someone knows a better alternative to NotScript, do share.
For Mozilla Firefox you have similar extensions:
- AdBlock Plus (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus/).
- NoScript (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/noscript/).
If you desire more anonymity (a highly commended value on Revleft), then the Tor Browser Bundle (https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en) might be worth a look. It is an amended version of Firefox which already includes above extensions and also features a built-in Tor (https://www.torproject.org/).
Do share extensions for other browsers and/or alternative extensions. Our collective knowledge is more than the sum of its parts.
