View Full Version : Favourite kind of liberal?

Mine would probably be the "philosopher king" types, who, despite being otherwise somewhat progressive, come to some horrible ideological conclusion through a bunch of liberal philosophical crap. If that makes any sense.

The middle ground type.

''Hey guys, just stop arguing, if we just found the golden middle of a mixture between socialism and capitalism, we can please everyone :)''

They're soo kind, it almosts makes me not want to send them to death camp in siberia.

This drives me insane.

I remember how one user here said 'constitutionalists' are essentially demagogues that base themselves on the 'appeal to authority' fallacy. I would say this is the same for liberals like that, except they use the 'golden mean' fallacy.

The hippies; at least with them I can smoke a joint and maybe listen to some cool tunes. Liberals infuriate me though :cursing:. I would truthfully rather have a political conversation with a conservative.

The only liberals I really can't stand are the institutional ones. You know the think tank types. Most average liberals on the street are decent enough people. A lot of them seem like they would support socialism if they could overcome all the propaganda that America has been fed for the past century.

All of them are soooo bad, it's hard to choose. I really understand now why Marx found it more worthwhile to converse with intelligent conservatives. Maybe the middle ground type, they're pretty hilarious and stupid.

eric922
19th July 2012, 00:35
Are the middle-ground types really liberals, though? I mean I've talked to lot of liberals on various forums and most of them don't really like what they call "moderates." Most of them seem to want a system of Social-Democracy here in the U.S. and are perfectly aware that they won't get that by compromise. Maybe, I'm just dealing with the left wing of liberalism, perhaps the movement as a whole is more centrist.

My favorite kind of liberal? Trotskyists!

Naw, that's just what some of our hardcore MLs would say.

Generally I relate pretty well to liberal/left people. They are easy to talk to and at least are open to socialist ideas. I dislike the type of liberal who regards themselves as a staunch liberal but qualify it so much they are actually right wing.I know someone who was a liberal and sometimes even a "leftist" but voted for Reagan and then Bush II because "I have no choice, the Democrats are just so damn corrupt".This person was able to convince themselves that Jesse Helms, a bizarre right wing senator from North Carolina in the 80s/90s was a liberal whom "we have to support".

I have also known a few liberal racists. One person hated Bush, hated corporate America, supported the Occupy movement but also disliked blacks and was paranoid about Jews. Whatever virus that person had, I hope it wasn't contagious.

the type who think that they have the most solid, rational grasp of life, society and universe, whilst their opponents, whether left or right, are all raving lunatics. talk a lot about "policy".

come to think of it "rational" is the liberal version of "common sense", innit?

Most of the hippies I know prefer to hit a bong rather than spark up a joint.

It's diffcult to define what a liberal is anyways, in any place outside of america a liberal would be recognized as rightwing but in the US your terms are all confused. I definately agree that a Social Democrat would reject compromise and probably more now then ever.

My favorite kind are the ones who aren't smug pricks, and are willing to discuss things in a civilized manner. The kind I hate most...more than anything, are the smug arrogant fuckfaces who think they have it all figured out. Who think bombing campaigns and wars are perfectly fine so long as a democrat is president. Then all is excused! I seriously want to punch every single one of these arrogant dicknosed, assclowns in the face...twice.

I totally forgot:

Huge-ass statists who advocate bullshit like "mandatory national service" and banning everything but public school because social contract theory. And a subset -- really 'progressive' types who, despite supposedly being progressive, foam at the mouth over Manning & Assange and ***** about "traitors."

Just got back from folk fest (the hippie meca from around my way) and had a long drunken political discussion with my friends and a bunch of liberals. People who organized for the green party (eww) needless to say things got slightly heated but apart from me and my friends the discussion sucked; instead of dealing with the substance of what I said they repeatedly called me pretentious.

I have to admit that the Scots really do have a solid reason for their nationalism; if there was a reason to ever actually support a nationalist movement, simple and beautiful "fuck the tories" would probably be the best.

the ones that can see the intellectual merit in leftism and read lots of Marx/Chomsky/David Harvey yet through some sort of mental gymnastics always reach liberal conclusions and say things like 'yea but that doesn't make economic sense' even though they agree with the fact that mainstream schools of economics are pure and simple ruling class ideology reified as a science.

Wait, actually those are the worst. I like the joint smoking ones.

Yeah the "dude socialism is like the moral thing but it doesn't just work like implementing scandinavian style social democracy everywhere would" kind of people are pretty fucking bad.

I like the average liberal folks who are basically sincere but don't have any concept of an alternative to the system. I like the Michael Moore (of Rodger and Me) old-school pro-union pseudo-populist ones because that's basically what my parents are like.

I hate the moralistic yuppie kind whose moralism is usually just a mask for their misanthropy and anti-working class elitism.

I hate the "my professor once told me..." ones and the think tank ones and the condescending ones. I was handing out anti-war fliers after Obama won the election and a yuppie woman grabbed the fliers from my hand and said it was a waste of paper, and besides, "Obama is elected, the war is over now... so put that away". Barf.

The Jon Stewart types - those who outright dismiss anything on the "fringe" left or right, and say they are "equally awful" - without even knowing what they stand for. Basically the smug bourgeois types who have no connection to the working class but feel they know what's best for us - which is usually some terrible combination of support for imperalist adventures, protest politics, and signing a couple petitions while driving around in an SUV.

I think Stewart is really funny, but this stuff annoys me so much. It is one of the reasons I like Stephen Colbert better. I think Colbert is funnier and I think he really really hates the Right.

I hate these types of lifestylists...they also fail to realize that "buying local" ends up costing the average person a shit ton more.

Also the "organic" freaks who spend $10/lb on mushrooms and wheatgrass or some shit annoy the piss out of me. Try riding a crosstown bus in the middle of summer or having 10 bucks to spend at the store and deciding between 10 for $10 Easy Mac or 10 for 10 cans of chicken noodle soup to last you for a week until next payday. I've been there.
