Modern day amateur and semi-pro athletes (ie, not on broadcasted sports teams) are essentially slaves who get by on passion alone.

The woman who won at figure skating (from Korea) became a national hero and star of sorts, but before and after her family struggled immensely. The only way for her to turn a buck (and maybe a nice buck, I'm not sure how much she's earned by this point) is to do sponsorships. It's been mostly bakeries and beer commercials (which are more like America's Coke commercials in style), and could have been much worse.

In addition to this story, there was a previous one about how London will also police athletes to make sure they don't inadvertently endorse non-official-sponsor companies.

Olympics just fleece the local governments, shake down the spectators, and enslave the athletes for the glory of the sponsors and the glory of the national governments. Police brutality, housing demolition, CCTV proliferation (PRC's got nothing on the UK), bankruptcy, and additionally SAM missile installations on the rooftops in London, and now brand police.

I wonder how many hot dog (sausage and mash? fish and chips? curry? I'm not British) street vendors loitering outside the Olympics will get burned by this.

It seems they deliberately go over the top with those SAM's and warships in the river so they can pretend they are demobilizing only to have the less obvious stuff stay in place.
