The BBC (http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/bbc) has pulled a film about the experiences of rioters during last summer's disturbances just hours before it was due to be broadcast after a ruling from a judge. The film, due to be broadcast on BBC2 (http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/bbc2) at 9pm on Monday, was a dramatisation based on the testimony of interviews conducted for the Guardian and London School of Economics research into the disorder.

And the follow up:

Lawyers for the BBC are considering making a formal appeal against a court order that has banned the corporation from showing a dramatised film (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2012/jul/16/court-order-bbc-film-riots?INTCMP=SRCH) about the experiences of rioters who took part in last summer's disorder.

The ruling from a judge prevented the docu-drama, which had been due to be broadcast on BBC2 at 9pm on Monday, from being broadcast "by any media until further order".

I was looking forward to watching this so it is a serious WTF moment. I want to know why they had it stopped and who stopped it? Although, it's pretty obvious, really, but I'd like some comfirmation... Conservatives don't want some bitter truth to be unleashed while they have to look all prim and proper for the Olympics no doubt.

It would be hugely damaging for the Conservatives, no doubt.

Though having said that, it could also backfire if the rioters come across as idiotic, self-serving and hell-bent on looting as opposed to rioting to show their displeasure at the system that's crushed them.

Yeah the BBC took a pretty awful tone with the riots, it's hard to believe they would paint anyone other than the police and property owners in a positive light.

Hopefully the makers will publish it anyway.

I'd really like to watch this program.

Hopefully it'll be released or leaked at some point. Then we'll be able to see exactly what made this docu-drama so awful a judge had to prevent its broadcast.

Nice job breaking it, m'lud.

Probably has some info that would have hurt the pigs.

Without knowing the details of the court order I'm hesitant to speculate. I'm not sure why we're implicitly assuming that it's the courts and not the BBC who have dropped the ball on this one. It's not like the BBC is incapable of producing reactionary shit that could perhaps get on the wrong side of laws regarding incitement.

Of course, regardless of the details, preventing the broadcast of the program was a wrong-footed move. I would guess that more attention will be drawn to this program as a result of the court order and possible subsequent appeal.

If that was the case, do you think the government would have censored the documentary? They'd be willing to suffer a few pot-shots if it made the rebels look "idiotic, self-serving and hell-bent on looting". They'd still come out ahead.

Things are really getting scary. How far as the eroding of once-common bourgeois norms like freedom of the press gone in Britain? From the libel laws to bans, it's a wonder anything can come out at all. How far down the road have we gone, and is there any turning back?

It seems a trend worldwide that the bourgeoisie is doing away with even it's own "democratic fundamentals" and has been for several decades. Is this evidence of decadence? A system that is even damaged by its own modes of operation?

The court order was brought because there are still some cases ongoing. Two big ones just finished this week. They didn't want anything to be used in someones appeal saying that the jury had been prejudiced by the program.

That's a great excuse from a great excuser (the SPGB is really a peaceful apologist for capitalism in Britain isn't it?).

wow WTF? where did that come from? would you care to back up your claim? Since well you know we're one of the only parties in the world who don't advocate reforms or any sort of running of capitalism or the state. So quite where you get that idea from is beyond me

I'm sorry if you're disappointed that it wasn't the Bilderberg group or Lizard aliens in the form of geriatrics who sent down an order from on high to stop the documentary from going ahead as it would fundamentally shake the foundations of global capitalism. But you know the state wanting to put people in jail and keep them there isn't exactly an excuse now is it?
