I've seen a lot of crap this year but there were a few gems....
Buffalo soldiers - funny, violent, romantic (sort of) and historically interesting.
El Crimen del padre Amaro - witty little Catholic expose and morality tale
Once upon a time in Mexico - popcorn fun
Spirited away - charming Japanimation
Bellez de rendevous - French animation, words fail me
Commandante - I fell asleep but what I saw was nice
Finding Nemo - Awww look at the little fishes

I can't think of any good films that came out this year.
There probably were none.

I will say Lars Von Trier's Dogville. He is, in my mind an absolute genius. I love nearly all of his movies. You should all see it if you get the chance.
I just saw the movie "Elephant" as well in an independent cinema and I must say I was really impressed by that as well.

"City of God" about brazillian street-kid gangs was the most viceral (sp?) movie I saw.
There were some good documentaries that came out this year... such as "Bowling for Colombine", but unfortunately, most of the docs I heard about that sounded intresting I'll have to wait for on video because they didn't play around here.
"X-men 2" I agree, it was very good... much better than the first, although Ian makes me root for Magnito so much more than the magnito in the comic books I read when I was a kid.
I saw "Lord of the Rings" and it was quite good, but it really dosn't stand on its own... (it's almost all non-stop action and battles) so I can't really say it's a good movie on its own because it's only good when you know what's come before.

Wasn't that last year? Regardless agreed, absolute dynamite movie - I came out the cinema weeping like a scared little child, I felt emotionally scarred and exhausted...

Buffalo Soldiers was a great film!!! (Bonus- my honey Joaquin Phoenix was in it)
I would have to say that the films i loved this year were
*El Regalo de Silvia (a spanish film that was actually shot in coruna): about a woman that suffers from depression and then commits suicide and her organs go on to other people, which she wanted. It was a gift that she was giving to other people so they can live a happy life. And so the film follows the life of these people after they get her organs. Its a really beautiful film.
*La Balsa de Piedra (portugese film based on the book)- follows the story of five people and a dog who somehow are involved with the movement of portugal and spain. both countries are seperating from europe and people believe it is the end of the world and that they are all going to die and so there is panic. its a wonderful film: funny, sad, and emotional. one of the best parts is when they make fun of the U.S.s reaction to the whole thing (of portugal and spain moving)

I had an eye on this movie, but just grap a Vcd of it after reading your post here. :)
The movie makes me feel so bad.... especially when the kid has to choose to shoot between 2 kids and when "Benny" was mistakenly killed~
I know they grew up in such depraved environments, but the devil inside them makes me wanna puke after watching the movie~ Fuck them and fuck capitalism and fuck disabled governments~~!!!!!!!
