To be fair, i've sat with my laptop in starbucks sipping a latte and munching on an overpriced sandwich, w/ a pair of silly sunglasses and what not.
I was just quite aware that I was a knob and not cool..
Actually, I think it was Caffe Nero. Starbucks is like, so unethical in the way it exploits the resources of farmers in developing countries. I just totally couldn't live with myself if I bought my coffee from there.

I'm probably going to try to cover that song in stupid hipster, acoustic guitar, douchebag fashion. Like the douchebags did with Outkast's Hey Yeah, or just about any Lady Gaga song. But to be fair, I'm only like, 1/4 hipster.

Every time you try to bash hipsters, you just wind up giving them the affirmation that "they" crave. Assuming that by "hipster" you mean superficial cultural carnivores who eat trends and poop cliche, they'll be more than happy to see the knuckle dragging "mainstream" fret over the detritus left in their wake; after all that still leaves them ahead.
Anyway, if you are going to try to critique hipsters, it doesn't make sense to make fun of the particulars, like some stupid vest or thick-rimmed glasses, because that shit changes and chances are by the time you can put pen to paper to mock it it's already out of fashion and you just look like an out of touch neanderthal for even bringing it up (bcbm's lame article is a good example, no offense bcbm).
The problem is it's too amorphous of a subculture, given that it's very nature is to consume and trivialize everything. I just don't like superficial people in general, whether they are easily identifiable in a crowd or not. These people always existed, they just decided to get uniforms.

i'm not sure why liking some thing over another makes you superficial, or at least more superficial than anyone else. most of our culture is vapid as hell, its not like 'hipsters' have a monopoly or even an excess of this.

I think one of the most hate-able things about hipsters is that they are so fluid and, for some reason, always seem so wealthy, probably because they don't choose their own style, but go around chasing whatever's 'hip' (obvs) at the time. I.e. they have enough dollar to change their style/adjust it every season, whereas most of us like, buy a pair of shoes, or a coat, and then just keep em til they get too old, or in my case, get a massive hole in my shoes during the rainy-est part of the year :(

this isn't really the case. there are some wealthy people, some though just work and use the money they earned to buy clothes. you can get good deals at thrift shops. and there isn't really much 'chasing' what is hip, that is what popular culture does. most hipsters do choose their own style which is why there is such a wide range of people considered hipsters

it doesn't take much money at all to get clothes that are wearable if you go to the right places

I dunno, because of where I live, I tend to see hipsters as a bit more homogenous in terms of the cultuer in the past 3-4 years. You know, skinny types wearing stripes, fake glasses, Olly Murs-esque hairstyles and wearing shoes like loafers or whatever.

Just thought I'd let you all know that I wear a fedora on the regular. And also that I don't like you. But I also don't like the fedoras they sell in Topman and the stuff people wear with slogan T-shirts or what have you. One should wear a proper gentleman's hat in a proper gentlemanly fashion or one shouldn't wear it at all.
I mean I know people who wear hats and don't adhere to proper hat etiquette what the fuck is wrong with you?!

I think, for me, the most annoying tendency associated with California hipsters is the ironic-elitism and ironic-racism. I also think that the economic crisis has broken hipsterdom - at least in the bay area - because the trust-fund, tech-job hipsters went back to looking like yuppies and the part-time job service-working youth "hipsters" aren't able to follow that trend. I call working class "hipsters" slacksters and am trying to get it to catch on to distinguish the majority joe-job working or unemployed hipsters from the yuppie hipsters - but it's just a silly thing I made up.
In some ways I think hipsterism a reaction to people wrapping their heads around the fact of downward mobility for this and the last generation. If bike-messengers are a romantic job, if you work a shit-day job but have a silly working class mustache from past decades or drink PBR as a joke, you can insulate your own downward mobility with irony. Also I think ironic- or hipster-racism a way for people to deal with living in basically gentrified white areas in urban non-white cities. It's like they are uneasy with the contradiction and have no faith that things could be different or that they might be able to challenge racism and so they "ironically" draw attention to it as if they know it's there but are above it. Sometimes it's also just elitism and racism though.

no, vintage and thrifting to find cool shit on the cheap is a favorite pasttime of the hipster. this is also why we collect shit like vhs and audio cassette tapes, because they are cheap as fuck. i have literally hundreds of tapes and have probably not spent more than 30 bucks for the whole thing and lots of great 3 dollar shirts
I dunno, because of where I live, I tend to see hipsters as a bit more homogenous in terms of the cultuer in the past 3-4 years. You know, skinny types wearing stripes, fake glasses, Olly Murs-esque hairstyles and wearing shoes like loafers or whatever.maybe it is there i dunno what culture does elsewhere. here in the midwest we are all poor and dirty and don't give a fuck. i guess there are well to do hipsters too, but we only mingle with them to steal their booze or they are our friends who stumbled into successful music projects and so we love them

There are a lot of food shops and stores around here that have latched onto the hipster image for marketing purposes to get business from the local indie music/fashion oriented types (who eat it up), so they literally only hire hipsters. Which makes getting a job harder in the downtown area. Which sucks because I live downtown and don't have a car. I always used to joke about hipsters and indie rock types in a non-serious way, but I didn't use to have an actual hostility towards that subculture until I moved out of my parents house and seriously needed employment and it was harder to get jobs in the area where I live because the hip image had been adopted by businesses.
