View Full Version : "V" Masks
They're this generation's Che Guevara t-shirt, ie., worn more often than not by people who have little or no idea where wearing them they came from. I'm not talking about the movie/comic book, I'm talking about 4chan annoying Scientologists over DMCAing a video on YouTube. But I'm seeing them worn "seriously" at occupy demos and I even stumbled on a Facebook photo of someone at pride in new york...with their name tagged of course.
They're something that angers me. Thoughts?

Now, I'm one of those elitist snobs who loves the comic and hates the movie but-

So yeah, the folks @ the occupy demos have probably seen the movie, and if they haven't, they are obviously on the same page. As for Guy Fawkes? The meanings of things mutate with time. Like you don't need to know that the word 'guy' used to be an insult to refer to someone as a 'guy' in the modern sense. The same thing will happen to the word 'motherfucker' in 500 years, you can count on it.
So what the dealio?

I think they're silly and kind of creepy. I also think they are already a relic - in Oakland people would wear them at demos and quickly realize that it was sort of self-alienating and the only people who would come up to people wearing those masks were newspaper cameramen. So now when I see the few people that still wear them at demonstrations, I just assume they are an awkward loner who wants to get a picture in the newspaper so they can tell people they do interact with in normal life: "Hey that's me... no, you can see that that's my watch in the photo so you know it's me!"
The Scientology thing was incredibly rediculous - man the things that people will do sometimes... I mean it wasn't like there were 2 million people in prison and a couple of wars and repression of immigrants going on at the time - obviously Tom Cruise and Scientology are the most oppressive things going on in the US circa 2006.
I'm not sure if some of the V-wearers matured politically somewhat or if others just kinda adopted it as it became more a part of protests in 2010 or so... probably a little of both. I think in Europe and probably the US, it was a way for people new to protesting to feel like they have some ownership over it and that they have symbols that are "theirs" and not connected to past struggles.

Since when has the risk alienating people ever stopped leftists from bringing out our inessential weirdnesses at every available opportunity? People walking around with placards with horrifying murderous dictators on them do so in the hope that the rest of us come around to worshiping these scumbags, and people in V masks do so in the hopes that one day everyone will come out wearing masks and...
????
Profit?

I thought these things went away long ago. Maybe early October 2011? It's like Herpes now. What can kill it?

I think they're tacky and stupid, and they piss me off.
But maybe if I actually read/watch it, that could change my opinion.

Read Watchmen first though if you're on an Alan Moore kick. Never watch the Watchmen movie. Except the opening credits. The credits will make you tear up little if you've read the comic. The rest will just make you want to strangle everyone involved with the project.
But yeah, read V before watching the movie too.
