View Full Version : Any Thoughts on Magic Mike?

Has anyone seen this movie? Is it worth watching? I'm hearing bad reviews.
However, what I really find interesting is the reaction by so many men. Why are men so threatened by this movie?
Are they really concerned with body image issues and male objectification, or is it that they feel threatened by the idea of women taking control of their sexuality?
Why do so many men feel it necessary to disparage the women going to see this movie? Double standard or challenging privileges (or something else)?
Any thoughts?

I wasn't aware of any such controversy. Could you give a bit more information?

Huh, I read that somewhere. Didn't check rotten tomatoes, though.

Just sounds like your typical "men's rights" bullshit, not any real controversy surrounding this particular film. But this blog is hilarious:
Real Men, Real Dads is the blog of Josh Ray, a former U.S. soldier, father, husband, and undoubtedly a man. The focus of RMRD is on being a father and a man in the current American climate. RMRD is an extension of Josh’s personality, and aims to promote modern manliness and benefit the world in some small way.
About the Owner-Creator-Administrator
Josh is an intelligence professional for the U.S. Government on occasion and a professional in everything he does always. Josh also ring announces for pro wrestling, raps, blogs, writes, reads, and whatever else he feels like doing. In a world where fear has permeated everything around us, Josh tries to live fearlessly. It’s not an easy task.
Fearless. Intelligent. Devoted to Family.
That is where RMRD comes in. The battle cry of this blog is “Fearless. Intelligent. Devoted to Family.” and it is not to be taken lightly. That battle cry should be the life-guide of every real man and every real dad on the face of this planet.
In a fearful world, much is given to the fearless man. The fearless man understands that he will never truly be without fear, but strives daily to master that fear. Fear is what keeps us at a deadend job while bills mount and debt crushes us.

That blog is hilarious. And yes, I'm inclined to think it is "men's rights" bullshit.

If Mathew McConaughey has taken the time and effort to put out yet another stellar and convincing performance then it is our duty here on Revleft to give it serious consideration. Like his abs, those performances do not come without much planning and acting preparation. Magic Mike is a treatise on the condition of the male "shackles" our collective psyche has been restrained by for centuries. Given his progressive stance on Syria, Zionism and, goes without saying, "acting", it must be said clearly here that we are in the midst of the McConaughey era.
Magic Mike? You people fucking kill me.

My girlfriend has always had a crush on Channing Tatum and went to see it with her girlfriends. I've gone to the strippers; I am not in much position to criticize. But for the record no I do not "feel threatened by it" and any male who does, has some pretty serious insecurity issues.

I don't think much of his acting but he is hot.
He's not that attractive imo.
I disagree. Though he could do with some body hair, it's a shame so many guys go for the waxed look.

let me guess without reading it that this guy is going to say B-B-B-B-BUT IF WE DOTHIS W/ WOMEN IT IS SEXIST without considering that women are portrayed in hella sexualized ways all the time (with the "all the time" thing being the issue -- the focus is regularly on women's bodies).
edit: i was right.
also i think this bit is silly:
"This isn’t an argument of good looking vs homely. I’m simply arguing that many women who get angry over the objectification of women and unrealistic beauty standards do a lot of googly-eyeing of the latest Joe Sixpack McAbs. Or Channing Tatum."
like i said before the problem isn't people googly-eying anyone. it's the problem that women are pretty much constantly portrayed in a hella sexual manner. The "Male Gaze" or whatever is pretty much the norm while the "female gaze" pretty much doesn't exist.
also i am p sure most women don't find these dudes all that attractive. i'm basing this off the idea that I don't think a lot of men think a lot of actresses and models look particularly attractive or ideal.
I don't think people cling hold the "ideal" as ideal very often at all, tbh.
fuck it nvm
