Nothing too shocking or revelatory here, just banging my head against the conservative "HRH Liz number 2" wall of support for this pointless institution.
*thud* Why *thud* oh *thud* why *thud* do *thud* we *thud* still *thud* have *thud* a.... *fx collapse*
The cost to the taxpayer of supporting the British monarchy has risen by £200,000 in the last financial year, Buckingham Palace accounts show.
The Queen's official expenditure increased from £32.1m in 2010/11 to £32.3m in 2011/12.
There were reductions in the Civil List, most of which pays Royal Household wages, and the cost of running Buckingham Palace press office.
But spending rose on both royal travel and upkeep of royal residences.

I don't care. I won't argue against the monarchy on cost, because that implies that when the monarchy, as an institution, becomes 'profitable', that they will become 'useful' or acceptable.
They could bring in 1% of GDP per year and i'd still be a Republican.
They are the anti-democratic institution extraordinaire.

I wouldn't mind calling someone my queen she paid me to do it. I'd even bow to her, no skin off my back. I've done worse things for money. But paying for the privilege? Outrageous!

I hear half of that can be accounted for by the rising cost of gin.

yeah.... i agree with your principle.... it is nothing to do with the money ...... even if she cost a shilling a decade..... the idea of her is wrong!!!!!!
agreed!!!!!... but........
it still does make a normal person's blood evaporate...... the fact that so much, SO MUCH, SO FUCKING MUCH, SO FUCKING MUCH OF OUR OWN, our , OUR OWN, OUR FUCKING VERY OWN MONEY,
IS.......... IS SQUANDERED..... ON SUCH DISGUSTING PERVERSITY..... WHICH RUBS SALT IN THE WOUNDS OF THIS DECAYING, DISFUNCTIONAL SOCIETY....
How can such wealth be amassed, how can such a state of affairs be sanctioned and supported ..... and how can a civilised society conduct itself in a way so clearly rooted in injustice, inequality, and corruption, prejudice, secrecy and contempt.

My favourite defence is that the Queen brings in tourism money. As if Neuschwansteing and Versailles never get tourism, oh wait, France is the biggest tourist destination in the world. #1. Not per capita, #1. Over India, China, and the USA. Simply the most.
Then there's the argument that Britons pay rent to the royal family so they can't use their lands.
Why should the Crown have any lands?! Seize the damn land. Britain has sadly has never lost its aristocratic and horrible distribution of real property. Start with the Windsors.
Tradition? Slavery and genocide are American traditions. The Revolutionary War was egged on by slaveowners and by westward expansionists.
Any UKers know any other idiotic arguments in favor of the Crown. I keep hearing these same three over and over. They're so patently moronic and yet people actually parrot them. I wonder if they know they sound like Americans who say "If we do X, then the terrorist win."

The only other 'arguements' I've heard are:
Oh she's not got any actual power per se, leave her be, it's fine, it doesn't matter, it's chamring really, look at her waving. Hey queeny, helloooo!
And, it's part of our national identity, like tea and the union flag and casual violence at footy matches, god save the queen, rule brittania, bibble bibble.
..or something like that

its useful to point out facts like these in relation to the excuse about national identity, because average joe hangs union jack bunting from his house and buys a little union jack flag for his car, not understanding the fact that the very monster that is shafting him is waving that flag while he does it. it is a financial, ideological and fucking spiritual problem if you ask me, when it comes to the average working man or woman.

Now I'm no fan of the monarchy. But I thought Kate's dress at the wedding was just lovely.
