View Full Version : CC of KKE: War goes hand in hand with the crisis

The Press Office of the CC of the KKE made the following statement regarding the machinations against Syrian and Iran:

The escalating tension in the Middle East, with at its centre the violation of Syrias airspace by a Turkish plane which was shot down, Turkeys appeal to NATO and the imperialist threats regarding an intervention against Syria and Iran are creating a very hazardous situation which is pregnant with dangers for a new imperialist war in the region.

These developments express the sharpening of the confrontation between the imperialist powers for the control of the regions natural resources, the commodities transport routes and the markets.
They demonstrate that the capitalist crisis and imperialist wars go hand in hand and threaten the peoples with new wide-scale bloodshed.

In these conditions the KKE calls on the workers to be in a state of readiness and vigilance:

 So that Greece is not dragged into the new imperialist wars of the USA and NATO, which are being prepared against Syria and Iran, and which will have tragic consequences.

 No treaty obligation must be observed which directly or indirectly entangles the country.
 The base at Suda must not be used. It must be closed down now!
 All Greek military forces which are abroad must return home.
 The military exercises and all the agreements for military cooperation with Israel must be cancelled.
 The struggle for the disengagement from the imperialist plans and NATO must be strengthened.

What are the chances of Greece joining NATO if there is a war on Syria? What do the other parties say about this.

Greece is a member of NATO. So if NATO goes to war vs. Syria, then it would certainly be a key airbase if nothing else. And, given the large size of the Greek army by NATO standards, probably ground troops would be involved as well.

As .part of the various bailout deals Greece has been forced to buy several billion euros worth of military equipment, including a 1 bill euro submarine from Germany, helicopters from France and lots of military equipment from the US. This is at a time when, by the end of 2012 it os estimated that wages will have declined by 40% and pensions by 30% since 2008. The Greek army is the most well equiped army in the Eastern Meditteranean.

I believe Greece has some presence in Afghanistan.

Question: What is SYRIZA's position on events in Syria?

A more important question than usual, as that might tell you what a SYRIZA government, still a possibility if the the current government collapses and you have new elections again in a few months, would do if NATO went to war against Syria.

Surely they can't have been altogether silent, Syria just ain't that far away from Greece by boat.

If they've been "supporting the Syrian revolution" like so many other leftists have been doing, then it's a good guess that they wouldn't refuse to participate in a NATO invasion of Syria. After all, they don't call for leaving NATO, do they?

They dont call for leaving the NATO, but they are asking the NATO not to interfere in the civil war in there. That is the typical PASOKist language we listen to the last 30 years. Btw, PASOK's main slogan in 1981, the first time it got elected, was "Leave EOK(the pre-stage for EU) and NATO now!". Kinda like a de ja vou but more creepy.
