HE thought of himself as a wise man and, doubtless, he was. But he made a small mistake.
"Cuba has to be punished," he said one day. Our country never even pronounced his name.
It was a totally unwarranted offense.
What is he talking about? And when did Deng say Cuba should be punished?
I put this in Politics because its a recent story but I don't mind if it's moved.
And while we're at it, what is this about?>
THE most revolutionary German I have known is Erich Honecker. Every human being lives in his or her era. The current one is of infinite change, in comparison with any other. I had the privilege of observing his conduct when he was paying bitterly for the debt contracted by the man who sold his soul to the devil for a few shots of vodka.
I retain for Honecker the most profound sentiment of solidarity.
Who sold their soul to the devil? Does he mean Gorbachev or Yeltsin and Is the US the devil?

I can't imagine Castro saying that. The only way I could imagine him saying such a thing is if he was referring to Cuba under Batista BUT, Castro is one who always seems careful with his words so, I doubt he'd say something like that anyways.

Fidel is an old man, you should not pay too much attention to all the details in his published 'reflections' - he was writing about Honecker because the two had an interesting diplomatic relationship, and it can be said that they were allies, because out of the revisionist group, they were quite close and similar.
In fact, East German doctors and teachers came to Cuba and the entire health-care and education system were built to imitate the East German one, which was one of the best in the post WWII East states. Another thing - Fidel visited East Germany and met Honecker and the others, and Honecker came to Cuba, they went hunting because both enjoyed the sport.
Fidel also gave a 'present' to the "people of the GDR" - Ernst Thälmann Island - named after the famous German revolutionary hero who was killed by the Nazis, (He was the chief of the KPD.)
Now that line seems perfectly normal and logical, yes?

I wouldn't be surprised if this come from any of the recent English language sources, starting with Miami-based ones, mentioning the strangeness of recent writings on Fidel's column in Cuba's newspaper (i.e. they're shorter, stranger, vague).

I will venture a guess and say that Deng may have been referring to Cuba's intervention in Angola. If you recall PRC supported the reactionary forces of UNITA against the nationalist forces backed by the USSR and Cuba. But Cuba actually sent troops. This was a supportable act by Cuba and a betrayal by the PRC leadership. Of course, since China was allied with US imperialism against the USSR in the 70s and 80s, I suppose there could have been many situations in which Deng might have spoke of punishing Cuba.

I think Fidel Castro could beat Deng Hsiao Ping at mud wrestling.
