REDHEADS are being turned away from the largest sperm bank in the world - because not enough people want ginger kids.
The director of Cryos International, Ole Schou, said that there have been so many donations made in the last few years that now the facility can afford to be picky.
The international sperm bank has been inundated with donations, and whilst demand too is soaring, not many people want to have ginger children.
Mr Schou said: There are too many redheads in relation to demand. I do not think you chose a redhead, unless the partner for example, the sterile male has red hair, or because the lone woman has a preference for redheads. And thats perhaps not so many, especially in the latter case.
Mr Schou went on to say that the only real demand for redheaded semen comes from Ireland, where it sells like hot cakes.
Cryos have now reached their capacity of 70 litres of semen, approximately 14,000 donations, and there are 600 donors on the waiting list.
Sperm from donors with brown hair and eyes is particularly in demand, because Cryos has many customers in Mediterranean countries.
Historically, red hair was thought to be a mark of moral degeneration and beastly sexual desires.
Scotland has the highest proportion of gingers, affecting 13 per cent of the population, but it is estimated that there are somewhere between 6 to 18 million gingers in America.

I thought this ginger-paranoid nonsense was an invention of South Park, seriously.
Except, then...

Simple supply & demand, I'd say. Not discrimination an sich.

It doesn't have to be discrimination, I mean look at how much red-heads get bullied, I could understand if parents don't want that to happen to their kid.
From the sperm-bank side, I don't know do they pay for the sperm? If they do I can understand that they wouldn't do that if there isn't enough demand for it.

But it reflects a culture of discrimination, how would you feel if they turned down blacks?
Anyway I'm inclined to post a bad luck Brian meme, but the poor guy already must have it hard enough.

Well from what I know, this crap is pretty recent. Many of my relatives have red hair and don't recall any bullying over it.

It reflects an undesirability of having red haired children. Which is not discrimination as we use the word commonly today. Red hair is generally not considered a want, aesthetically undesirable.
If they turned down Africans because they have too much "African sperm" already, it's not a problem.

I always thought the little carrot heads were cute. Not a day goes by when I don't see one and kneel down to thier level and pat them on the head and say "Ah now, aren't you just an almost person with that ginger thing goin on." Treat 'em just like regular people I do. But lets not mistake this kindness for reproduction rights! My liberalism only goes so far.

Uhhh...a person doesn't have much of a choice in their hair color, and saying a hair color gene is "undesirable" creates a discriminatory atmosphere.

What if they just plain didn't want a certain ethnicity because people didn't want to have children of color? Would it still be supply and demand or does it reflect racism and discrimination?

ask five different people my hair colour and you'll get five different answers, but whenever somebody wants to insult me they'll say i'm ginger (which i quite like tbh)
i'm not going to claim redheads are an oppressed minority tho

You don't choose your tastes either.
By the way, you do if you have to choose sperm which will grow into your child.
and saying a hair color gene is "undesirable" creates a discriminatory atmosphere.
Stating the facts (that a particular hair colour is undesirable amongst many) doesn't create anything, it's the facts after all.
It's like saying that me stating that interracial marriage is generally considered undesirable creates a discriminatory atmosphere. You've got it turned upside down.

That says nothing about racism. People have different tastes. The fact that people wouldn't want (half-)African children because they think European children are cuter (or a variation on this reason), is not racist because the motivation is aesthetic. If people don't want (half-)African children because they believe Africans are inferior, then it is racist, because the motivation is quite simply racist.
The fact is, few people like red hair for aesthetic reasons, so they rather not have their children be red haired. I do not consider that discrimination. Just like rather not having a child with a piggy nose is not discrimination--some people like it, most do not.

As far as I know, most if not all tastes are acquired. No one's born liking soda or what have you.
Stating the facts (that a particular hair colour is undesirable amongst many) doesn't create anything, it's the facts after all.Okay, but going around spouting those facts will hurt people. It'll make people think it's acceptable to go around bullying red-haired people.

True. Just publishing statistics doesn't do much harm. However, justifying anti-interracial attitudes because of those statistics isn't OK.

I honestly never knew that there was discrimination against redheads before this thread. Maybe because I have always been attracted to women of that complexion or that I never saw it growing up. This is all new to me so I am thinking maybe new to many others?

Really? Norway as well? As Ireland, Scotland and Sweden are the places with the most redheads, I'd have thought that Norway would be pretty tolerant, as I can't how the genetic marker wouldn't be common there too (something to do with Vikings, I suspect). But then again England has a significant minority of redheads and there's a certain amount of bullying here too.

Oh, the Sun, quality journalism...
Isn't the whole point of this sperm donation mumbo jumbo supposed to be that you're supposed to pick somebody who looks vaguely similar to the father, so that people will believe the child is actually a product of the relationship, rather than a third party? I mean, I don't think blond blue-eyed couples pick Sudanese guy sperm because of some kind of aesthetic desire for dark-skinned children, because that would be ludicrous...
With that in mind, I assume that the only people who could be expected to want a ginger man's sperm would be another ginger man. If there's no desire for that, all this proves is that ginger guys must all be super virile with incredibly high sperm counts, so they don't need any...outside assistance...

The dumb part being that you can get a blond/dark hair sperm and still get a readhead... recessive gene and all that...
But ya, I never had to deal with bullying for my gingerness (or at all) because I would just throw my books in their face and be like "you want to throw down chump?!"
It's unfortunate that this is so, because I had planned on donating ginger sperm, seeing as how I don't do well in the whole "having sex" department  It's also unfortunate because red hair is dying out right now... even as more and more people dye their hair red. (So you can steal our hair color but you won't have kids with us! Fuck that! )
