I loved DBZ when I was young (just like every other kid in the 90's) but for the most part I find amine difficult to follow and really strange.

Fist of The North Star - If you like Martial Arts you should find this anime to be awesome. (In my opinion, FOTNS inspired the creation of DBZ, with it's fast-paced hand-to-hand combat)
Hajime No Ippo - Boxing. The main character is a shy high school kid & after an encounter with an elite boxer, falls in love with boxing & becomes a fighter himself. Great fights, great story, great anime.
Cowboy Bebop - One of the best animes of all time. Just check it out. (Especially if you're into the Sci-Fi genre)
Hellsing - A British military organization specializes in situations dealing with the supernatural. Their trump card is a vampire named "Alucard", (read the name backwards & you'll figure out who he really is ;) ). Lots of action, sprinkled with some comedy. Almost reminds me of Buffy.
That's all I can think of for now. I would recommend this manga called Berserk due to it just having a great story, however, I personally am annoyed by the "demon rape" & "tentacle porn" that's very prominent in Japanese culture.

you kind of can't go wrong with gundam just because it's robots but I like 08th MS Team in particular. Instead of focusing on a bunch of super-soldiers, the protagonists are basically regular soldiers/gundam pilots.
Everything bcbm said is good. Fist of the North Star is good. Cowboy Bebop is excellent.
I also liked FLCL a lot

So...I'm a huge fan of the Gundam SEED/SEED DESTINY anime. What are some really good animes to check out?
To Answer the original question; I would at least list the following as this person is a big Mecha fan.
Armored Trooper Votoms
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armored_Trooper_Votoms
This series comes around from the 1980s. And the story has very much that 1980s feel of fighting the war to end all wars. Here the difference between Armored Troopers Votoms and shows like Gundam SEED/SEED DESTINY as stated by wiki.
Except for its starships and medical technology, the VOTOMS universe is fairly low-tech (and is often described as hard science fiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_science_fiction)). Soldiers and combat vehicles alike are equipped with missiles and projectile weapons; only large spaceships have energy weapons, and then only in small numbers. The main weapon of the conflict is the common Armored Trooper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mecha) (also known as AT, described in a derogatory term as a 'tin can with a machine gun'), a mass-produced humanoid combat vehicle piloted by a single soldier. They are known alternately as VOTOMS (Vertical One-man Tank for Offense & ManeuverS).
Broken Blade
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_Blade
Broken Blade just cannot recently, and is slated for an audience in in their 20s. What is different though than other series is that it shows elite pilots being able to hit targets outside their enemies effective firing range or in some cases bring down their enemies with one effectively play shot. It does though give off that Gundam SEED/SEED DESTINY vibe. But the shows use of current day politics based off of resource depletion, and the use of military tactics like ambushes makeup for the vibe
Exosquard
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exosquad
Exosquard is a 1990s Western cartoon which was produced in response to Japanese Mecha Anime. Therefore they have manned robot battles just like in the Japanese Animes. Unlike the Japanese Anime their robots are nothing more than piloted suits, instead of 100 Tons walking tanks.
even a lot of good anime suffers from pandering to teenage boys.
This is a stereotype, created by capitalist. Because Anime looks cartoony many capitalist believe that it will only be watched by "teenage boys". Therefore the List turnaround and mostly publish Anime tailored to this group of "teenage boys". There are a lot of enemies that have heroes that are in their 20s to 30s, but are a fewer number than the ones that have heroes for teenagers, because of this view by the capitalist.
Legend of Galactic heroes, exosquard, and Broken Blade are a few that do not have heroes in their teens.
god this forum is full of nerds
Yet another stereotype. People who watch Anime do so for a number of reasons.
Reason number one people who watch anime do not like to watch reality TV shows. Which they find the demeaning, annoying, and boring. They would rather watch a show with a unique setting, then watch a kid running up and down an obstacle course.
Reason number two there are a lack of good series on television. Face it today in the US we are seeing more reality TV shows than good series. Even channels like TNT and sci-fi network which have mostly shown nothing but series are now showing their own reality TV shows. Is this lack of good series which have characters in unique and interesting locations, to people watching cartoonish like anime.

Berserk has a really good storyline, however I don't understand the need to have so much raping in manga & anime (Berserk has ALOT of that shit). I've heard that Japanese people are sexually repressed or something of that nature, to the point where they put all their sexual fantasies in anime & manga. I don't get it....

Wrong. All the characters are Japanese unless otherwise specified. They just aren't drawn using Western racial indicators of Asian-ness.
Anime and manga drawings are highly stylized. Westerners think they look Western because that is their default. Westerners have to indicate Asian by exaggerating racial characteristics. Asians do not do that. The default look is Asian. We don't do anything to indicate "Asian".

I was talking more about the blonde hair and the blue eyes rather than the lack of Western conceptions of stereotypical East Asian traits. I read a long time ago from the creator of Naruto that he purposely makes his characters look more Western to appeal to Americans, this is what bothers me.

I like Black Lagoon, it's the only anime series I've enjoyed. Akira is a great film, love the music and the narrative. I'll also be cliche and say Spirited Away is another great film.
I watched Ghost in the Shell and it was shit. It was trying to be a mix between Blade Runner and Akira but failing miserably. I've watched and hated Neon Genesis Evangelion; there comes a point in time where your whiny, pathetic protagonist is just a little too whiny and pathetic. And I read the Naruto manga quite religiously up until the time-skip because afterwards it became essentially Dragonball Z.

honestly, i think the amount of fucked up sexual shit in the berserk universe is pretty realistic. the medieval age was hard time and people got raped and shit all the time and women were pretty much worth dirt. reminds me a lot of the depiction of sexuality in song of ice and fire.

That because MOST capitalist are willing to pay only for those anime for young male teens. Like you example above. You should note that this is becuase they stereotype everthing. Tell me then why some women watch anime then?

Well I'm going to set the record straight, EVERTHING ON TV IS BETTER THEN A REALITY TV SHOWS. Anime right now is a low cost alternative to the lack of series we see today. The only tv series that are being renewed are one where they can get cheap sets. That why Terra Nova was not renewed.
And "jesus" is for thesis.
This is a stereotype, created by capitalist. Because Anime looks cartoony many capitalist believe that it will only be watched by "teenage boys".

the age of the heroes doesn't really have any bearing on the demographic the show/film is aimed at.

Gundam 00 is one of the best I've ever seen. It's not explicitly socialist, but the themes are progressive and critical of the hierarchies of government & the war they produce. Without giving too much away, the setting is in a fictional near-future in which nation-states have consolidated their power into 3 major global power blocks, and a group called Celestial Being have declared that they will intervene any military action between countries with force. Celestial Being carries this out through their 5 ideologically driven Gundam Pilots, who have superior technology to every army on Earth, and characters on all sides view and participate the resulting series of conflicts in different ways.

You should check out the first 4 episodes of the 'Aoi Bungaku' series. The first 4 episodes are based on a novel by Japanese author 'Osamu Dazai', the novel is called 'No longer Human' and is the 2nd best-selling novel in Japan of all time. It's short but incredibly interesting to watch, no magic or supernatural stuff, just real life, especially focussing on the darkness.
The people who I've recommended it too all absolutely loved it, definitely check it out :)
