I was very hyped for this movie, and thought that the people making it would be good and sensible enough to pull off using a ridiculous and over the top concept to make a genuinely funny movie.
I was wrong. Ever so wrong.
To be fair, the movie was not all bad. There were a couple of really good acting jobs in it, there were a couple funny scenes(mostly unrelated to the main characters), and the ending was really good.
But dear god, the two main characters are horrible cliches that have the depth of cardboard and are utterly uninteresting. There are a couple other characters that are written clichely, but THEY are supposed to be like that! Not the people we are supposed to focus and support throughout the movie.
Not only this, but the main gag of the movie is not only unfunny, but actually disgusting.
The two main characters are a stereotypical black person and a stereotypical sheltered white girl(who is a nazi, but the nice and innocent kind). The gag is that the nazis, upon capturing the black guy, turn his appearance into that of an "Aryan," ie blond hair, blue eyes, WHITE. He remains this way for the rest of the movie, and a great deal of the "comedy" in the film is the utter hilarity that is a black person being a white person. In short, whiteface. A film released in 2012, that I expected to be good, is relying, in all seriousness, on whiteface to make it funny. I cannot describe how much this infuriated and disappointed me.
The worst part is that most of the movie that doesn't involve the two protagonists is actually pretty good. The Nazis barring the female protagonist and her father are used well, with mostly good jokes and such, and the actors for their leader and his second in command are perfect. The characters of the president and her staff plus the UN have a great subplot and do deliver some great laughs, plus are key in the fantastic ending I mentioned. The special effects and design of the movie are great, and the band Laibach gives it a good soundtrack. Specifically, I really love the design of the Nazi stuff. The way it is explained is that the Nazis on the moon colony were cut off from the Earth's technological development, and so their technology changed and evolved in completely different ways from Earth's, so we are given giant iron spaceships that run on furnaces, vacuum tubes and punchcards. Not too mention the various superweapons the world's nations secretly developed and hid from each other are brought out too, and they look great. MIR returns. The movie could have actually been good, and there are parts of it that are very good. Which is why it is so disappointing that they have attached the good parts to an anchor and thrown them into the sewer system.
All in all, this is a movie that could be remade to be funny and great. As it is, however, if you must see it, DO NOT SPEND A CENT ON IT.
