The Young Pioneer

I'm currently trying to figure out my topic and I'd love to hear what other people have done. I'm not sure about how specific it should be, how popular the subject should already be, etc.
I have a couple ideas myself but I'm worried that there's not enough information out there for what I'm interested in. This could work to my advantage (ie- become one of the first to publish something about the topic), but it could also be a disadvantage (the topic might not have enough sources to back it up or make it a feasible thesis).
Not gonna share my topic thoughts as it's related to controversial history and this isn't the place on Revleft to begin a tendency war.
But any general advice about thesis brain storming, writing, etc. would be much appreciated. If you've written one yourself I'd be especially interested in hearing about your process. Anyone who answers seriously will be thanked!
Edit: Yeah, I know, gonna be in debt up to my ears, what are you doing, Young Pioneer, bourging up Revleft, blahblahblah. I've dug my grave as a poli sci BA already.
Edit 2 Re: Masters of the Arts, let's say, Regional Studies (history/culture focused).
