Turkey: Kurd with lemon accused of supporting terror

A Turkish prosecutor has demanded that a Kurdish man who is deaf, illiterate and unable to speak be jailed for 25 years for supporting terrorism.
Possession of a half-lemon was cited as evidence against Mehmet Tahir Ilhan. Lemon can ease the effects of tear gas.
Mr Ilhan is charged with making propaganda for the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and with taking part in an illegal organisation.
Mr Ilhan, a bazaar porter from the city of Mersin, denies the charges.
Using sign language at a hearing in the south-eastern city of Adana, he said he had got caught up in a violent pro-Kurdish demonstration.
Under Turkey's anti-terrorism law it is an offence to show any sign of support for the PKK.
Laws criticised The BBC's Jonathan Head in Istanbul says Turkey's judiciary often administers harsh penalties on bafflingly slight evidence.
However, even by Turkish standards, this case is extraordinary, he says.
If Mr Ilhan is found guilty, the court is expected to pass a sentence close to the 25 years that the prosecutor has asked for.
Over the past 18 months, hundreds of Kurdish activists, journalists and politicians have been detained under anti-terrorism legislation.
The use of Turkey's anti-terrorism laws has been widely criticised. The Council of Europe said it was having a "chilling effect" on freedom of speech.
Our correspondent says the Turkish government is trying to encourage Kurdish moderates with such concessions as Kurdish language classes in school, while at the same time isolating the more hard-line PKK members.
But the sometimes incomprehensible actions of its judiciary will inevitably undermine such efforts, he adds.

Yeah I am sure this helps to make Kurds feel like an equal part of Turkish society where their participation is appreciated ...

That's absolutely ridiculous !

If he's deaf, he really needs something that eases tear gas. If he was gassed, his two main senses needed for walking would be gone, as well.

deaf, dumb illiterate Kurd

You should change the title, because it's offensive on the first sight.

But, back on topic - i had a conversation with a Marxist-Leninist-Maoist from Turkey, and he says the situation there is horrible for the Kurdish nationality these days, worse than before. They have great troubles and they basically can't get over them, not to mention there have been arguments and fights between Turkish and Kurdish communists too.

It's a shame communists cannot get over ethnical barriers.

Which brings me to my question. Are Kurds not an ethnicity rather than a nationality, especially since Communism will have no nations? I'm asking, I am not trying to troll or start shit.

the man is Being discriminated against for being a Kurd. That has to be mentioned, if a Turk was getting discriminated in Greece we would mention that too. We are against all discrimination. You are right Kurds and any other peoples are ethnicities, there will be no nations in communism.

Thanks for the answer, comrade. I understand any discrimination of any manner must not only be mentioned, but dealt with accordingly; if exposure to the local public/world public does the trick, good, but if it takes violence, oh well.

Keep in mind that this was not a meeting between two political organizations which have thousands of members, but a meeting between two friends who seem to be a bit disillusioned about the situation in Turkey. The activity of many organizations is not to be ignored, however, since the Turkish state is especially severe, organizing is very hard.

Excuse my ignorance, but this man was caught with a piece of fruit? Or is lemon a slang term that I'm not aware of?

I'm sure he means dumb as in mute, not dumb as in stupid.

No. I am using dumb in the traditional sense, not to refer to an idiot. Dumb means someone who cannot speak. Helen Keller was dumb but she certainly wasn't stupid. It is usually implied that this meaning is meant when listed with deafness, as the two often go together.

That is a shame, it goes to show how notions of what it means to "Be" a member of a particular nation-grouping leads to reactionary politics. To "Be" a good Turk according to the reactionary nationalism, you need to submit to Turkish cultural standards, which the Kurds exist outside of.

Yes, a piece of fruit. That is this definitive proof that he is a PKK propagandist.

This.

Well that is an excellent question. They are a nationality right now, but Communism does seek to remove the material conditions that reproduce the notion of nationality. Marx supposed that institutions like nations, states and whatnot are all social constructs but that they are real in a sense, and will only go away when the conditions which reproduce them are negated.

Yes, a piece of fruit.Wow. That's just pathetic. Despite a mockery being made of justice, it's almost hard to call this a tragedy or an abomination or something like that.

The Turkish police didn't put in enough effort for it to be a tragedy.

It's just so pathetic.
