So just finished watching the film by Andrei Tarkhovsky. Absolutely amazing. People say it's slow, but it literally had me enthralled the whole time. I'm also a fan of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, and to see how the two things are so similar, but also so different, is amazing. Need to pick up a copy of Roadside Picnic, though I hear that's even more different. The one gripe I have is with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is that there is nary a woman to be found. It really wouldn't have been too hard to fit in, heck since most everyone wears a mask they could probably even keep all the same character models and just throw in a female voice actor or two. But whatever.

Apparently Roadside's pretty tough to find. I remember looking on amazon and not finding it (aside for some hella expensive used copies).

Roadside Picnic is wonderful, although I've never seen the film. The book I have has both Roadside Picnic as well as Tales of the Troika, which is incredibly good satire.
The only thing I wish the games had more of that was emphasized in the book is the life outside of the Zone, as well as the element of random death. I'd like a game where you wouldn't find out how you died that one time until a long time later.

I like the book better. I have always felt in Tarkovsky's movies that characters are just tools for him to talk directly to audience. They do not seem to have their own motivation or logic of behaviour.

Its a really good book and it should be read by anyone with even a slight interest in science fiction.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R is an indie game, and most Indie developers are forced by low funds to use their programmers and animators as script-writers and voice actors. And the programmers and animators of GSC Game World looked like this:

Well, that kinda explains some of the english dub-overs.

But still, I think that it might be a combo of that, and also a quick and easy way to completely de-sexualize the game for most people, which I think is important in a setting such as theirs. Or not. Who knows?

on the point of de-sexualizing the game, when you look at the mods for pretty much any bethesda game, the top ones are always the nude or skimpy outfit ones, for stalker, they are atmosphere mods or shit that just makes the game more realistic or difficult.
it might also be the reason why there is so much sausage in the game.

And what great mods they are. I'm currently playing through Shadow of Chernobyl with the Complete mod and it makes it UNBELIEVABLY better.

I've always been disappointed by the fact that the Stalker Team doesn't dress up as stalkers for their group photos. kudos for the redcoat however.

the whole film can be found on youtube, actually. But right now I can't seem to find it. I'll do some more searching around and get back.
EDIT: Full Stalker film found on youtube here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYEfJhkPK7o&feature=watch-now-button&wide=1&fb_source=message)

Has anyone read this book?

It seems like it could be excellent, but one of the reviews makes me doubt its quality somewhat. Can anyone tell me if it's any good?

'According to Tarkovsky the film has nothing in common with the novel except for the two words Stalker and Zone.'

Oh so i finished the book a few days ago. i probably hyped it up too much and was a bit disappointed afterwards... but then i watched "The Grey" and as the movie progressed i kept thinking more and more about the book and then all of a sudden i really started to like the book.
