Yesterday the Alternative Information Center (AIC) published an excerpt of an Israel civics exam in which (http://alternativenews.org/english/index.php/news/israeli-society/4500-israeli-civics-exam-explain-why-jewish-girls-shouldnt-hang-around-with-arabs.html)a sample piece of writing instructs "the daughters of Israel" to steer clear of Arab men so as to avoid "violence for nationalistic reasons" and "harm [to] the Jewish majority of the state."
AIC found the exam after an Israeli teacher posted it on Facebook. AIC's translation of the civics exam question:
'The wives of rabbis published a letter calling on daughters of Israel not to hang around with Arabs. There are those who support this letter and those who think it's not appropriate. Express your opinion about the letter. In your answer, present two reasons and explain using concepts you learned in civics.'
The preparatory exam further provides a sample response in support of the aforementioned letter:
'I support the letter of the wives of rabbis.
1. If the daughters of Israel will hang around with Arabs, they are liable to have relationships and marry them. This would harm the Jewish majority of the state.
If the daughters of Israel will hang around with Arabs, they are liable to fall victims of violence for nationalistic reasons. This would harm their right to life and security.
Content in the civics exam falls under the jurisdiction of Israel's ministry of education, headed by Likud's Gideon Sa'ar. Earlier this year Sa’ar was criticized by teachers for spearheading "Ascending to Hebron," a field trip program to the West Bank. In January, 200 Israeli educators sent a letter to Sa'ar condemning the Hebron "heritage tours": "Introducing the program to schools is a manipulative use of pupils and teachers, who will be forced to become political pawns. Since we're dedicated to education, our conscience prevents us from becoming agents of such a policy."
