Do you think the Bolshevik decision to disband the Committees of Poor Peasants was a move to the right, anticipation of the NEP later to be introduced, a watering-down of the more extreme elements of war communism, or something else?

Bumpidty bump. I would argue that it is somewhat all 3 points, but more of watering down the extreme elements of war communism to win over the middle peasants during this time.

I thought they were incorporated into the village soviets, not disband?

In the case of merger, I think that was a good idea. Peasants power had to be limited, or at least not autonomous.

Technically they were merged, but it was a way to disband them pretty much. The Bolsheviks really didn't keep that a secret.

I suppose so, but I did hold the position that it was a positive move.

I hold a neutral position on it. I can understand why they did it (mainly trying to win over the middle peasants against the kuklaks).

I think the larger question is, was there any other choice?

That is a good question. The committees were pretty much failures and were not really producing the results needed (at least from the research I have done).
