well it's move toward capitalism doesn't really make it a great example for socialism.

It's been a cappie nation for decades now. Modern China is a TERRIBLE example of a socialist state. About as socialistic as the USSR was during the Stalin and post-Stalin era (i.e. not at all socialist.)

I'd say it's far worse than the USSR was. I would consider the Soviet Union progressive in comparison to today's China.
