Don Francisco, the host of Sabado Gigante, the talk show on Univision, saturday nights

Dear friends, last night I was watching the show Sabado Gigante on the ultra-right wing Anti-Hugo Chavez, Anti-Castro mainstream spanish TV station Univision. And in the comedy section of that show, there was this cuban saying a very very bad and sick joke, based on linking black people with gorillas.

I would like to know what is the purpose, the objective, the goal of racist jokes, not only racism jokes. But also on anti-poor people jokes, anti-obese people jokes, anti-elderly people jokes, anti-homosexuals, anti-lesbians jokes, anti-muslim jokes, anti-spanish people jokes? What is the purpose of these types of jokes based on demeaning some sectors of the US population?

I don't think we really have to worry about the majority of working latinos watching that, because They made univision a digital channel. No longer basic.

Well the Cuban Revolution disenfranchised a large portion of the Cuban bourgeoisie, primarily those of a solely Spanish or European background.

Silly question. The Cubans in the US were originally refugees from communism, as they see it. Largely the ruling class overthrown by the Cuban people, They were overwhelmingly white, whereas Cuba, a slave colony under the Spanish, is about half black. Because, in Cuba like in America, the people on top were white and the people on the bottom were black.

Plus the later "Marielitos," who were mostly petty criminals and such, who thought getting to America and being welcomed as "freedom fighters" would be a great racket. See "Scarface" and you understand what sort of people most of them are.

Anti-communism, reaction, and white racism go hand in hand. If the gusanos weren't white racists, that would be very strange and very hard to understand.

I hate anti-communist, the west just slaps the label of human rights activist, and they are loved. the main example being vaclav havel. I won't deny the fact they are refugees, but I'm sure glad they are refugees.

The goal of these discriminatory 'jokes' are to reinforce someone's discriminatory beliefs by reducing the perceived seriousness of the matter and thereby making it more acceptable.

Right wingers then tell the jokes amongst themselves both as an outlet of political angst and what they see as innocent humor, and sometimes the jokes are laughed at by moderates as shock humor. The people at large start to see racism, sexism, etc. as not something that must be detested and fought against but as something that can be laughed at.

That's the goal of the few people who benefit from racism, and by extension the goal of the jokes.

Indeed.

I had connections to Amnesty International through school, and they were sympathetic to my beliefs (granted, it was me, a few friends and a teacher).

Maybe we should bombard Amnesty International with the evidence of US imperialism and oppression. Hell, who was instilling international fascists?

EDIT: Maybe I'll write an essay connecting human rights (the majority of it) with communism.

It's an odd kind of racism that the Miami Cuban community demonstrates.

There's a level, or at the very least was, of racism at black Cubans which originates from past conditions in Cuba itself and it carried over particularly easily among the overwhelmingly white upper-class which left Cuba. Puerto Rico and, particularly pre-revolution, Cuba were I think the most white of the Caribbean islands due to about 3 waves or so of European immigration; Cuba especially so and allegedly Cuba was once the more racist of the 3 Spanish Caribbean nations.

But there's also a more particular kind of racism that is more 'xenophobia' than anything. Some Cubans may be completely fine with other black Cubans or other hispanic blacks but may be discriminatory against African-Americans and Haitians.
