I just got back from a very interesting evening. My History Teacher, a good friend of mine, told me that he and his wife would be seeing a Film called "The Weather Underground" and afterard a pannel would make comments and field questions from the auidience.
My brother and I went, as did my teacher and his wife.
First let me tell you about the film.
IN-FUCKIN-CREDIBLE!!!!!
It's a documentary about the Weather Men(people), a militant organization in the US during the late 60's and seventies. THe WWeather Men bombed several places in the US. Several members took part in the documentary and relived the experiences.
The Weather Men started as a militant faction of the SDS (students for a democratic society). Basically it was a bunch of rich white kids who were caught up in the steam of the leftist movements of the seventies who had nuthing better to do than smoke weed, have sex, and build bombs.
Originally they wanted to harm anyone to show the horrors of the Vietnam war, later that only bombed places when they were sure no civilians would be hurt.
Eventually they had to go underground and in time the organization broke up.
It was nice to see them in contrast with the other organizations, particularly the black panthers who for the most part hated them.
THen they showed what each member was doing now.
After the film a panel of activits came on stage and made commentaries and fielded questions.
It was incredible, 3 leftist activists and one conservative. It was really nice to be around leftists in nashville instead of all these conservatives.
People posed interesting questions and I learned that there is a leftist community in nashvlle, not a huge one but I'm going to join the Peace and Justice Association of Nashville.
THe most interesting comment made by an audience member was of one guy who actually new one of the leaders of the Weathermen.
The guy was a former leader of a student conservative organization and he got into shouting matches with a leader of the weathermen. THe guy used to be pro vietnam war but as it progressed he saw the error of his ways and he now regrets what he and his fellow conservatives caused in the world. ALot of his conservative friends went on to work in the Regan and Bush andministrations and commited so many underhand deals it's impossible to name them all.
THe man regretted this so much he almost started crying, I really feel for him. it's nice to see that conservatives can change.
The panelists were really cool, and hearing one panelist say "I agree with everything Karl Marx said about economics" made my day.
The one Conservative panelist seemed nice until she was rude to my brother.
My brother had read an article by her over the summer about black youth and he went up to her to talk to her about it...she just brushed him off and proved she is an evil B****.
All in all it was a good day. my teacher enjoyed it, I enjoyed it, my brother enjoyed it, and I suggest you all go see it.
I signed up with the Peace and Justice Association of Nashville so hopefully I'll be telling you guys of some activist projects I've partaken in real soon.

GREAT POST LL!!!
I saw this film when the fim maker came to RPI tech-school. I actually have personally met a former member of the weather underground. Naomi... who when asked if she still believed in a revolution said, "I don't think one will come in my lifetime, but it will come" and "I would do it all again".... :D (I'm sure you remember her from the film... she was the Jewish woman) She's a great woman, and takes on one of the major roles in the anti war movement here in Albany NY
There are also a couple of other former members that live in this city that I can't mention because the FBI is still looking for them.

Wow you met her? Geez, you are lucky. I can't wait till I can find the film on video. Hopefully through the activist movement in Nashville I can meet interesting people, though I'm sure I wont meet as many people as I will when I intern at the socialist party.
So tell me, what did you think of the Weathermen?

Do you mean the group or the movie? lol... I thought the movie was a great doccumentery, it was honestly done, showed alot of information about a group that, as the fimmaker said (who is about my age) was known of by almost everyone around at the time, but hardly known at all by our generation.
As for the group itself... I learned alot about it from Naomi, as well as the film. Naomi speaks openly about it, as the FBI broke 30 laws trying to catch her, and now basicly has nothing on her.
They had alot to be pissed off about, which she reminded me.. people today have just as much to be pissed off about, and she can often draw comparisons between that period and this, showing that we are moving into a frightening state of affairs, where our nation is exerting it's militery night to control and enforces it's economic interests worldwide, while people back home are being exploited... and legislation such as the Patriot Act is doing much to create the level of a police state that was experienced back then when the FBI opperated in a capacity to watch, control, and if need be eliminalte American people. (example: Fred Hampton, or Students at Kentucky State)
Being pissed off at these situations, and seeing nothing changing with protests... militant action seems quite plausable when you don't have any other option.
And, in Naomi's opinon... (who disagrees with some of the former members who feel bad about what they did) who did they hurt? The destroyed property. Blew up numerous buildings... but didn't kill one person. What is that compaired to the lives taken or destroyed by the years of war in Vietnam?

By the way... let me know if you ever find the film on video! I'd like to buy a copy of it also.

I have had it sitting in my Netflix que forever.
They don't give an estimated time out when it will be out either. I missed this movie because almost all independent films last 2 days in Portland, or they last 2 months straight.

Redstar knows quite a bit about the Weather Underground, being a former member of the SDS.
You can have a look at what he says in several threads about them...

yeah, RedStar is the man to go to. I've had several questions about them in the past, and he has always guided me in the right direction. The threads won't work for me, but I would be horribly interested in any literature that you cats can find on the topic. I haven't been able to dig up many books on it at all.
Lardlad, good to see you back.
Students at Kentucky State
Now HERE is something I really need to research. Kentucky State, if I recall correctly, is a minority college. UK absolutely fucking killed them in Basketball last year in exhibition...
What happened here, RedCeltic?

But if you want to know more, just ask & I'll answer you if I can.

Probably somewhat less than the massive amounts in the new left as a whole; sex is difficult to manage when you're "on the run".
