Dozens gathered in a city center park to mark International Day Against Homophobia. City authorities had sanctioned the demonstration, and a police unit shielded participants as they chanted slogans and gave out balloons to passers-by

Homophobia is basically rife in Russia.Many of the "successor" parties of the CPSU still adhere to the old Bolshevik line of the 1920s and see it as a "bourgeois deviation" or ignore the issue altogether.The official Communist Party is also pretty homophobic.
