ASAIK Quakers are pacifists, they don't have a religious heirachy, they don't try and convert people, and are basicly cool.
So why can't they (and religions with similer ideas) run around in a communist society? I actually seem to remember a few people here (such as redstar2000 I think) saying that those sort of people are fine, they don't build churchs for isntance. But for the rest of you, whats wrong with them?

They are my 'favourite' sect of Christianity. What is wrong with them? Well they are still Christians, but as I said in other parts this sort of community can and has been used for leftist purposes. I don't really have an arguement, but yes. That is all from me.

Some quakers are activists too. In my activism I have worked with lots of religions from quakers to catholics and I have no problems with them and I would argue for freedom of religion in a possible worker's government.

Religion is something that will pretty much always exist in some form so I believe it is to everyone's benefit to work with the religious community when they share our values.

Quakers do try and convert you.
At school a few years back, they came and organised a football (soccer to the unfortunate yankees amongst us) competition every wednesday at dinner. Which was fine. Until eventually they tried to get us all to say prayers before and after football, they tried to hold some talk during one of them about god but we got up and left.

Great story! :D
And perfectly illustrates a central theme of almost all religions. If you are deluded, in any way, into thinking that you have a direct pipeline to the "supernatural realm"...it's just about impossible for you to avoid inflicting it on others.
Given the premise, don't you earn "Heavenly brownie points" by winning people to the "true religion"?
You can see where it leads...

Christians in general will try and proselytize. However, most other religions don't. Fox example, Jews, Wiccans, Buddhists, etc. do not proselytize at all.

Buddhism, my friend, can be called a missonary religion. I think the thing is that we are not where their missonaries are that we see it that way.

Wasn't Thomas Paine a Quaker? Or from a Quaker family?

Apart from believing in utter nonsense I have no problem with religious people, however some of them like to burn heritics and attaract conservatives like flies on shit, Quakerism rarley seems to do this, they are very liberal. In fact I have a good friend who is a quaker.

If I find a Quaker on the same picket line as me, I would have no problems sharing a cell with him.

If their religion doesn't preach or teach to oppose me, then I don't oppose them. If the Pope tomorrow says "Communism is wrong and evil and must be stopped, it is God's will." Then all Catholics do it because he says it, I have a problem with that. But if they say, "so long as you don't want to remove us, then we won't try to remove you." I have no issues or problems with them. So long as they aren't preaching to change the economic system, the government, laws, through religious practices, for or against me, I am okay with it.
Just as much as I don't want a religion against me, I don't want it for me. As far as everything I know of quakers, they don't do this. Now individual members have individual beliefs, that is fine, so long as it isn't preached and taught. From what I understand it isn't.

Nichren Buddhists dont need to convert you, sure we talk to people about it but honestly you don't need to be concerned with us if we do that because.
1. We believe all people will eventually become enlightened
2. We believe you can achieve enlightenment even if you reject the sutra
Not to mention we don't really go around trying to convert anyone anyway.
SO LEAVE US THE FUCK ALONE!!! :)

I don't know about his family (seems unlikely but possible), but Paine was definitely not a Quaker or member of any other denomination.
Publicly, he was a "deist"...privately, I'm pretty sure he was an atheist.
What about those who don't think that they have a direct pipeline to the "supernatural realm"?
Well, would they be considered "religious" at all?
Isn't the real point of religious belief to "link up" with the "divine" in one fashion or another? Without the "pipeline", why bother?
As I understand it, Quakers do not speak during their services until "the spirit moves them"...suggesting that they are acting as "radio receivers" for "divine broadcasts". One can only wonder what happens when two Quakers get conflicting messages.
SO LEAVE US THE FUCK ALONE!!!

Perhaps, we should initiate a movement: Let the American soldiers go home crosses the Christmas day?
