Contracts

When do you think they're useful, if ever? How can one utilize the legal protections that contracts offer while maintaining the energy and agitation that produced them in the first place?

My co-workers and I are trying to organize my workplace and this is one of the first issues we need to address, so I'm looking for advice

A little over a month ago I marched in solidarity with a large group of unionized New Jersey professors and contracts were the biggest point of focus as far as demands go. In their case, they were pretty much getting professorships at low pay with no guarantee for continued employment, as well as benefits being cut, and being able to be fired/laid off with out a reason being needed, rightful/wrongful termination wasn't needed or could be fought. IMO, if a contract can keep those things, then it's good. Especially if your profession one where you have move where the work is.
