I feel... uncomfortable, about the word because it seems to me that it is so rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war.'

I have to agree, however I do feel pity for soldiers in these Imperial warbands who think their offering something good to the world.

The despair of an earnest liberal. He's smart enough to realize the role rhetoric plays in justifying imperialist wars. However, he knows the consequences of questioning the 'good faith' of anyone involved. I'd almost feel bad for him he wasn't of the payroll of those doing the white-washing.
Havee3 has the right idea, I really feel bad for most of the soldiers that have to go through that awful experience. I know a lot of people who joined the military because they couldn't go to school otherwise, and a lot of others are just fed lies to trick them into the war. You can't be a hero fighting for an awful cause, even if you thought it was right.

I kind of thought this guy was a tool but he has a point that is rarely ever acknowledged by media pundits. His show basically consisted of a panel of arrogant petty bourgeois liberals trying to sound smarter and more sophisticated than the other, but it's too bad he'll probably be fired for having an honest moment as a commentator.

A 24/7 "news" channel was bound to have some honesty slip through eventually.

I personally feel bad for the soldiers that joined the military out of having no other choice but to do so in order to pay for school. I agree, however, with Hayes in that not all men should be declared "heroes" upon death in military action. In light of the war being a likely imperialist venture, as well as taking into consideration the crimes committed against civilians that had no relation to the battlefield, Hayes may have accidentally stumbled upon a fair point.

This should prove to anyone that we are a hardcore militaristic nation and the public is OK with that.
Then again the comment is coming from a smarmy liberal. That's going to reflect bad on anything fair he said.

The military are the second biggest Sacred Cow in this country, behind police. I have had liberals get pissed at me for questioning the logic that soldiers are "defending our freedom"

The police? A lot of people have disdain for police even libertarian conservatives. God and the military are the sacred cows.

You forgot Ronald Reagan... which is a Demi-God to the conservatives in this country. Conservatives as of late have supported the police for squandering OWS and other protests. The police are a beneficial factor for the conservative and Capitalist followings in the United States.

I don't doubt that at all but I was referring to the general public, not just right wingers.
The general public is usually all about God, country and military.

Yeah -- I was at a baseball game on Monday -- all the patriotic bombast made me want to puke (the game was all right, though). This guy was pretty courageous for saying something like that. No doubt VFW and other orgs will be calling for his head on a pike. But he is, as cb9 noted, an earnest liberal. I mean even the bravest heroes in the US military are heroes for whom and for what? Imperialist slaughter.

The comments for this article are so disheartening. If there is a revolution in our lifetime the gulags are going to be crowded to say the least.

I like to think that that was a temporary thing, because of the past Memorial Day weekend -- that political atmosphere in the mainstream is not going to stick....

If the comments represent the majority opinion in the U.S. then I don't think we would have a revolution.
