So I got into a flame war with some US veterans over the fact that I think the US military is bullshit. Some dudes got mad when I stopped being solely outraged over dead US soldiers and also got mad about dead civilians and started pointing the blame partly at US soldiers. This was in a progressive discussion group. :rolleyes:

I was told I owe my rights to speak out and hold opinions to these folks, and that, on this day especially, I should show them the respect they're due.

I just can't take it seriously when I remember that these people dropped bombs on a Pashtun wedding and killed a shitload of people on what was supposed to be one of the happiest days of their lives.

Seriously, what the fuck is with liberals? Progressive and anti-war until it really counts?

M<e and my friends got into a fight at the bar with some Marines because one didn't approve of my Russian accent or the fact that I don't even have a state ID just passport, started an argument, calling me a commie bastard and illegal and mumbling and shit, and eventually I got tired of it, so I warned him then he started on again, so I spat in his face and then we preccedeed to kick their ass, get told to leave before the cops show up, then we go to the mountain to light off fireworks and trip FACE. Fuck veterans, I bvelieve the term is baby killere.

It sounds, in part, like it just got personal. It may have gone differently without some of the moral content to the criticism. But in general, yeah. No war protected our "right to speak" and historically almost every war the US has wages came with a wave of restrictions on bourgoise-rights. In WWI, pacifists and anti-war speakers were imprisoned; World War II brought a CP-backed self-imposed no strike agreement along with government internments of Asians (and the transfer of Japaneese-American wealth too since people lost their homes and the petty-bourgoise lost their shops and property). Now we have the PATRIOT ACT and so on - so war doesn't bring more freedom to anyone, it does the opposite historically. Also after WWI and WWII there were red-scares and a massive repression of dissent - in WWII part of this came from trying to de-mobilize a sort of populist mobilization for the war. Women had to be forced back into the homes and gays and lesbians who gained a degree of visibility and acceptance (at least the behaviors) during the war, were heavily re-repressed after.

So all freedom has come not from war, but from Class-struggle. The history of the Civil Rights movement shows this too. Blacks were promised a better social deal for their participation in the war and war-time industry, but after the war, they lost industrial jobs to returning white soldiers and all the legal repression in the south was as strong as ever. It was people fighting here that gave us what rights we have, not people "doing duty" for our masters.

War has never really been in defense of anything other than capital, religion and politics. There will be one or two exceptions where defensive wars may have been fought (WWII is often sighted, from the Brit perspective anyway), but otherwise these guys that choose to shoot who the govmnt tells them to shoot are not doing it for God and country or whatever...that's what they choose to believe.
They're doing it for the government, for the industries that get fat off the death and the arms. It might be 'brave' to face bullets and IEDs and shit...but it's not fucking noble or right!!
(just had a guy on the phone at work who made a point of 'being stuck in a foxhole outside Hellmand' like that was supposed to humble me or impress me...nearly scoffed out loud)
