View Full Version : Facebook languages?

There's lots of threads on Revleft about "What languages do you know?" etc. and I'm wondering...

How much of a language do you have to know to feel comfortable adding it to "your languages?"

I don't mean to be so superficial as to talk about Facebook but I noticed some friends of mine add languages to their pages and I know they can't really hold a conversation in those...just "Hi, please, thank you." and such.

What's your personal thoughts on this? What's your criteria for saying you know a language, when you posted on the other thread on Revleft, when you post on fb, or anywhere else, including in person conversations?

I wish that there was an option for "studying" such and such a language because I don't think I'm fluent in anything. If you've studied a language for 4+ years is that enough to say you speak it?

Blah, give me this one stupid post, it's late and I'm drinkin'. :o

What I love about Facebook languages is that I can announce to the world that I'm fluent in Parseltongue.

To be fair, once you're used to the facebook layout and functions, it'd be possible to browse it in practically any language.

Californian English, and Spanglish.
I'm nearly incapable of dropping my Californian dialect when speaking (I'd have to be "acting" to do so). And I have little trouble in a Spanglish conversation.

But straight up Spanish conversations take forever, as I have to re-iterate everything they said to be sure I understood.

Yeah you're right, I used to do that on my iPod back when I was learning basic Russian.

Californian dialect?
We have a dialect?
I suppose we do, but is it distinguished enough to have a name like that?
Response to original question: I can speak Spanish well enough and English... Also I put "Spanglish" and "sarcasm" because I can.
My Facebook language is set to Leetspeak though because it's loaded with nerdy jokes that make me happy inside.
