As soon as they found out that defenseless immigrants ran many of these places and they could coerce free shit from them.

On a side note what spelling are we sticking with in this soon to be even more irrelevant thread? Donut or Doughnut?

Probably because of the convenience in that most coffee shops that sold coffee late at night and early in the morning also sold doughnuts and would make them early to be ready for the morning rush.

I had heard once that in the old days, coffee shops and diners would give cops free donuts. The shop owners liked it because it kept cops hanging around, which kept armed robbers away and was good for business in general.

You could go with thr Mexican spelling, Donas (pronounced as such).

I think the donuts thing comes from just back in the day these were the common sort of fast-food and coffee place - it's an easy food to eat on the go or in a car. If office workers walked or drove around all day then they'd also get the same reputation because most offices I've been to there are people on break drinking coffee and eating bagels and apples and chips and donuts and so on.

Now in many places the pigs just go to Starbucks.

On a side but related note: I remember reading this news story about a decade ago where a Police Department had to issue warnings to their officers not to go to certain fast-food locations because cops kept getting sick and they suspected that the workers were spitting (or worse) in the food when the cops came through the drive-through :D The memo the department sent out had something in it about how they suspected this because officers had noticed people working there who have "history with the department". LOL - don't insult your servers when you are a customer somewhere and if you're a cop... well your daily harassment and thugishness is going to end up causing you to eat shit one day.

I worked at Delis and Liquor stores where the bosses always had us give them stuff for free. They'd always be in waltzing around like they were the neighborhood UPS delivery person shooting the shit (working these positions I always tried to cultivate some solidarity or at least friendliness with Postal and other delivery people - they can be hilarious or hilariously cranky and usually have good stories either way).

I hated it and just acted politely cold to them.

Never worked in a place where cops demanded or threatened or expected free service and coffee or food because when they did expect free things, it seems like the boss was already OK with that and had told us to do so. So I was never sure if this was a custom, or an arrangement, or expected or what.

used to work at a coffee shop in DC where the corporate rule was, a cop walks in, he goes to the front of the line and gets whatever he wants for free. naturally, it being DC, there was an enormous cop population (the definition included all metro cops, VA and MD cops commuting, FBI, CIA, secret service, WMATA cops, private security and even meter maids) and they often cluttered up our tables and made it impossible for actual customers to find a seat. the worst though was this one metro pig who i found out actually demanded the names and SSN's of everyone there and would run weekly warrant checks on us (apparently he did this to a lot of the businesses on his beat)

I hope he got a reeeally special addition to his coffee for his trouble.

I mean even if it wasn't for the cop thing, you go to a coffee shop and make more work for yourself? What a sociopath!

I'm sure I've waited on a lot of doctors in my working-life, none of them ever offered me a free check-up

unfortunately, all of our prep space was out in the open, to spice up his coffee we'd have to do it to a whole batch, which we'd then have to either waste, or serve to innocent bystanders.

After much thought on the subject I have come up with one question. Why aren't Donas an everybody thing? The cops got something here. I mean really, who doesn't like Donas, Beignet's, or Churros? Shit's off the hook!
