homegrown terror

my little pet project (so to speak) is the eradication of traditional fishbowls. their curved shapes don't allow enough surface area for proper aeration (fish need oxygen in their water, and air contact is how it gets in there), they don't work well with filtration systems (fish waste produces ammonia and other toxins which can kill your fish), they cramp your fish and stunt their growth (most are a gallon or less, far too little space for even a small fish) and need constant water changes (which their owners hardly ever perform) "betta planters" (water-filled vases with soil and plants growing from the top) are even worse, betta fish have a labyrinth organ (like a primitive lung) which they use to get most of their oxygen directly from surface air, so the planting very effectively suffocates them. remember as a kid, when your goldfish died and your mom told you "it's okay, they only live a few weeks anyway." she wasn't necessarily lying, but sorely misinformed. most people's fish die not due to a short lifespan (goldfish regularly live for two or three years if taken care of properly, bettas even longer) but due to the improper and sometimes downright negligent care they are given.
what other small-scale causes do you support that often get overlooked here in favor of larger, global impact issues?
