I ask because I'm on a short car trip (as a passenger) and need something to rock out to other than just anarcho-punk music.

Rise Against the Machine, Rise Against... many others but I am having a brain cramp.

I assume you mean stuff that isn't hardcore, since nearly every hardcore band are anarchist or socialist, excluding angry liberals.

i know i keep plugging them, but you can't go wrong with mischief brew, or gogol bordello and johnny hobo and the freight trains. dropkick murphys and flogging molly have some pretty good leftist anthems too.

The Blood Brothers aren't so much explicitly revolutionary as they are angrily populist.

Crisis were Tony Wakeford and Douglas P's post-punk band back when the were trots, before the went fascist.

The Pop Group rank among The Fall and Joy Division in terms of quality post-punk.

I can never understand what Domo Suzuki is singing, but since Can's name stands for Communism Anarchism Nihilism and they often spoke of socialism and restructuring society , so I'd say they're lefties

Arch Enemy, Propagandhi, The Agonist if ya like the heavier stuff.

And as others mentioned: Refused, The (International) Noise Conspiracy, Rage Against The Machine

Also, if you are in for some less heavy stuff, try the folk-artist Evan Greer.

If you like The Pogues and the like, Roaring Jack would be your alley.

Definitely Propandhi. Also Leftöver Crack. Those are the most explicitly political bands I can think of, I know there should be more though.

privileged suburban kids who took teenage rebellion a bit further than most. not saying i didn't enjoy them when i was younger, but they're kind of a running joke in the serious anarcho-punk community.

Tell that to my Anarchist friend who keeps recommending them ;)

Sadly, you just described most of modern day American Anarchism.

The Clash, Rancid, Rage Against The Machine, Bruce Springsteen (yeah he's liberal/left but he has a fair no. of good leftist songs), MIA, Billy Bragg, Manu Chao, Propagandhi, Chumbawumba,Bad Religion, Dead Prez, MC 5 (the Rage Against The Machine of the 60s/70s), Holger Burner (German Trotskyist hip hop artist), Woody Guthrie (1930s, good stuff though) Ani Difranco-despite the fact that she currently supports Obama her early stuff is interesting

Tom Waits, Gil Scot Heron

SOAD - sugar, deer dance, mr jack, chic n stu - even though serj is just, at best, a reformist
The Offspring - Americana - has situ ideas though I'm sure the band is liberal. Same with satisfaction and street fighting man by the stones, TVC 15 by bowie, and a lot of good songs.
Serj tankian - most of his first cd, haven't listened to the third, second one sucked

I don't have a lot of leftist rock, compared to other genres. not including stuff like johnny hobo since you said no punk.

I think most anarchists would agree with his statement, I don't think it applies to anyone here.

No, as an anarchist, I would agree. The american anarchist scene is just that, a scene; not a movement.

No one's said Angelic Upstarts yet?!

I second Dead Prez and Woody Guthrie as well.

There's always early Bob Dylan, although he didn't want to associate with either side...

so yeah, i've learnt from this thread that "explicitly leftist rock" is usually bad both politically and musically.

also you know it's bad when you have to cling to someone like billy bragg as "one of us". a labour party loyalist and then a lib dem. lol.

Thou is awesome and its like insurrectionary communist doom metal

LYRICS:
The memories of revolution disappear as the wind shifts.
But a mighty, reckless, shameless, conscienceless, proud crime--it rumbles in distant thunder.
And do you not see how the sky grows presciently silent and dark?
Propaganda must be by deed, insurrection, assassination, bombing.
Resignation is death.
Revolt is life.
I will never willingly wear the chains of your sacred concepts, Natural Law, Common Humanity, Reason, Justice, The People.
There is no hope in conditioned morality.
I deny everything and affirm only myself.
We can all enter this bitter class struggle.
We are all ordinary workers, natives.
We must rise in revolt if we will rise in this world.
Resignation is death.
Revolt is life.
