I always liked the propaganda cartoons they were pumping out in the 60's. I guess they don't count as films though.

They've already been mentioned but I'd go for Potemkin, White Sun and Stalker. Potemkin being the best.

From the classic period Alexndre Dovzhenko is my favorite director. Especially great are Earth, Zvenigora, Arsenal, Ivan, and Aerograd. Next is Dziga Vertov for Man With a Movie Camera, Enthusiasm, Stride Soviet and Three Songs of Lenin.

I'm really impressed with Eisenstein's work. The film Stachka uses the film media in ways that would be advanced even today.

I remember being impressed by Fate of a Man and The Cranes Are Flying, movies we saw when I was an undergraduate. I did not know that The Fall of Berlin was available. I would be interested in finding out from revleft comrades how one gets access to classic Soviet-era films. I think I remember that the USSR or one of the workers' states issued postage stamps commemorating the films The Fall of Berlin and something called The Great Citizen, which I would be interested in seeing. Any information will be gratefully received.
Someone mentioned a couple of films that appear to come from novels by Sholokhov; I would think that attempting to put Sholokhov's fiction on film would make for a very long movie.

Баллада о солдате (Ballad of a Soldier) is probably the best film I've ever seen period.
But then I love Grigoriy Chukhrai.

So many to choose from.
I'm a big Tarkovsky fan and of course particularly Solaris (which I think is better than Stalker personally).
One that hasn't been mentioned that I enjoy is Autumn Marathon (Kind of a tragedy-comedy).
This cartoon from the late 70s called Firing Range is pretty neat:

I forgot the title of it (would be very grateful if someone recognizes it :D) but it's a movie set (and I think made) in some time in the Khruschev era about a young man who comes back from military service and has it pretty good, gets into a good school, lives quite comfortably with his mother, hangs out with his girlfriend, but is really despondent about how empty his life is. He tries to find meaning in a lot of sanctioned activities like going to parades and hosting swing parties at his apartment but gets sick of it. And there's a whole undercurrent how he grew up without a father who was killed in the war, and he yearns for the heroism of the previous generation.
Anyway, I thought the character was really believable, the scenes were this immaculate mixture of bringing out the beauty in the mundane, and in a sense it was one of those films that provided a glimpse into the issues many soviets coming of age dealt with.

Two Comrades Were Serving (http://www.youtube.com/verify_age?next_url=/watch%3Fv%3DZhq-aNlQJuo%26feature%3Dplcp),(one of my favorites of the favorites) White Sun, Quiet Flows the Don, Come and See, and Stalker. Oh and the Young Avengers or something like that. i love the quirky but somewhat or more serious ones. Kin Dza Dza was just too weird.
Ive never finished Solaris but it was pretty good. Year 1953 was interesting, then theres all the WWII gloryfests which are interesting but mediocre.
Subject wise, the Civil War as a back drop or main part has made MANY great movies.
Oh and Alexander Nevsky, i never completely comprehended it because i watched it (every time i tried) while in bed and half asleep.

I haven't seen that many but I am eager to watch more. As others in the thread have said, I also found Battleship Potemkin to be a wonderful film. After I watched it in a Russian history class, I had to rewatch it the same day just to see some of those amazing sequences again.

My favorite is "unfinished piece for the player piano." "I am Cuba" is also excellent.
