Well, if you're looking for boots for warehouse work or farm work, having a steel toe would be recommend to prevent possible injury. Not to mention, you could also get those shoe pads from Dr. Sholls which would help fit the boot to your foot more comfortably.

Thing about boots is that a lot of them need to be broken in--rather, they break your feet in. There will be some discomfort, so that's normal.

Worn boots are some of the most comfortable shoes ever.

I acquired a pair of boots from walmart that were about 25 bucks. They lasted about two years of every day use at work and constant exposure to the rain and they fit good when I acquired them and they fit excellent now- even now that the soles are falling off.

Any recommendations?

I had a pair of Timberlands for work and the snow and those bad boys held tight and lasted forever.

I have a pair of dr. martens without steel-toes, which are alright, but they're mostly pretty. When I have to do something in the garden for example I prefer to wear clogs.

Army surplus shop. I got a pair of £55 boots for £25 because the shopkeeper mistook them for second-hand.

Doc Martin's are awesome.

The German Army produces some pretty good boots, and because of their national service, lots of them appear in the army-surplus shops (I guess the people doing military service only tend to wear them for a short time).

EDIT: For some reason I thought you were in the Netherlands (and probably had access to German Army surplus - we do in the UK so why not in the Netherlands?) but I see that in the last ten minutes you've moved to Ontario. D'oh!

But you probably would be better off with some steel-toecapped boots for work. On the other hand, your employer will maybe provide you with some, so maybe buying some first isn't such a good plan.

I wear boots, but they're Xtratuf boots for fishing, not like construction boots.

But I've heard that Danner produces some good products.

my grinders work great. doc martens are wonderful too, both have extremely comfortable soles and will outlive just about any wear you put em through. (the only reason i threw out my old pair of grinders was because i passed out at a party and someone thought it'd be funny to paint them pink!)
