According to a report in todays Observer the Labour Party leasership is considering a promise that if elected at the next general election then they will hold a referendum on membership of the EU. Trying to outmaneauver the nationalistic right such as the Tories and UKIP.

While I have no illusions over the EU, doesn't matter if as a worker I'm exploited by British or Europaen capialists. What is worrying is that the media will end up ratcheting up national/xenophobic language which in terms of the impact that the austerity attacks will have on millions of lives may lead to a rise in the right.

This only works if it comes from a party that at least has aspirations towards Socialism i.e. leaving the EU to forge links with 'solidarity' states - in Latin America, Scandanavia etc.

But yeah, as you say, this sounds like 'Blue Labour' rearing its ugly head again.

interestingly labour mps are, on average, more eurosceptic than their tory counterparts; there was an right-wing eurosceptic pressure group that rated mps votes on eu related issues and the majority of tories had more "pro-eu" votes than labour, but eurosceptic tory mps were more consistent in their anti-eu votes

name me some right-wing pressure groups so i can find the site again

I don't think Labour will risk it, was reading today that 46% are in favour of leaving supposedly, with those against only at 30% (the rest being undecided). They might prevent UKIP gaining any ground amongst their support but I don't think that's a big enough threat for them to risk a referendum
