People should take for free whatever they can. I'd be wary of torrents though; if you have a lame ISP, a seeder could report your IP address to them and get your internet shut off just like that. It's happened to me before.
edit: (not to suggest there are many other viable ways than torrents... I'd just have someone with a better ISP download for me and send it directly, though it is a sluggish process.)

you're a complete moron. borrowing books from your local library and adopting pets from an animal rescue shelter doesn't make you a liberal. neither does using open source software.
for example, i use libreoffice because i cant afford ms office and i can't be bothered with the 500MB MSO torrent download (internet in australia is holyshitbad).

And takes a shitload of time.
*Shrug* Let's say a loaf of nice, homemade-quality bread runs you about 6 dollars. A batch is likely to make three loaves, so that's 18 bucks - close to two hours of work at minimum wage where I live. A batch of bread definitely doesn't take two hours of labour. All told, sure, baking it takes longer, but unlike at work, you can do other things while the bread bakes - read, fuck, send email . . . Further, if you're organized collectively and effectively in your daily life, you can make a lot more bread for a lot cheaper, and share it around, meaning that, on the whole, your whole community needs less money, needs to work less, and, consequently has increased time and capacity to organize. Is baking your own bread the revolution? No, of course not, but who said it was? On the other hand, is it strategic? Absolutely!

I don't know where you live, but where I live you definitely don't pay 18 bucks for three loaves of bread. Maybe about 6 for three loaves. I'd rather pay that than make bread in the limited time I (and most people) have.

I live in Quebec - and I could maybe get three loaves for six bucks, but they'd be utter shit with more preservatives than flour. To get bread anything like the quality of something one would bake at home is fuckin' pricey.
Don't get me wrong, I still eat shit wonder bread sometimes, because I'm not rolling in money, but, in any case, point being, producing collectively saves time on the whole, even if an individual task seems to take longer.
Anecdotally, I've been able to live rather well on under $12,000 a year - to some degree this has to do with the relative freedom afforded white people in imperialist countries, but it also has to do with collective production and self-organization. In turn, not having to work more than 15 hours a week has meant tremendous amounts of time and energy to devote to political projects, travel, etc.

This - GIMP is amazing
Also, it has a ton of awesome plugins ...
And it can actually be used for some serious stuff. I've done a bit of web design with it and some photo post-processing (UFRaw hooks into it)

Don't get me started on graphics...!
I've switched my entire graphics pipeline over from the Mac to Linux *because* of the amount, ease, and quality of free software resources available for it.
A good complement to GIMP is the G'MIC plug-in, providing all of the filters you're used to using with Photoshop:

All of my creations come from using these three pieces of software, mostly:

LibreOffice is better than OpenOffice.org.
While not free, AK Press is worker-run and has a great selection of books. Buying from them instead of Barnes & Noble or Amazon (though yes, Barnes & Noble and Amazon have a much wider selection) would be just as much "sticking it to the man," probably.
VO.DO has lots of free to share (and of course, free to download) films and shows and such.
And of course, there's The Pirate Bay.

Not sure if flaming. How is it that baking one's own bread has anything to do with the hippie subculture? This type of post makes you look like a right-wing asshat.

It's all a matter of strategy. If I go to my local supermarket at the right time I can get bread as they're marking it down. That means i'm getting my bread for about 10p most of the time. Don't know if they do this in America, but over here when the stuffs about to hit its sell-by date they mark the price right down.

My local public library actually has shit for books. It's the uni libraries that have all the good stuff. However, you can go to the public library and get a special membership that let's you check out books from the uni. Saved money that way while at community college.
Oh yeah, and I love gimp.
And even though I managed to get a hold of a virus free copy of FL studio, I still would love to know about some open source home studio software. As far as I know, none exist (at least not at the level of FL Studio, or Garageband, Acid pro, etc. )

(semi)free food: grow your own vegetables, fruits, spices, potatoes, chicken (eggs), goats (milk),...
People that don't have space for gardening (eg live in the city) should buy a piece of land together with other people and grow some food.
The sea, lakes, rivers, creeks, are still not privatized and free to swim.
Couch surfing is a free, fun and social way to travel. You should google it.

Never buy bottled water if it can be avoided. That being said, I should mention that the area I live in has a huge amount of the world's fresh (and potable) water. I would only buy bottled water if the surrounding water was too contaminated to otherwise deal with.
That, and I'd never buy pre-maid baking/cooking mixes (freezer bags, cakes in a box). Just make it yourself, it turns out better and is usually cheaper.

If you run Windows, Microsoft Security Essentials, is a free, good anti-virus.
if you want to watch episodes of a show for free, just google "(insert name of show) free episodes" and some ad-heavy probably virusy websites will pop up and you can see free episodes. I know it seems basic, but I used to think torrents were the only option.

If you're ever in england its handy to bear in mind that the law entitles you to free tap water in any resteraunt, cafe or other business premises with running water. I always get a kick out of walking into starbucks and places like that and asking for free tap water (yes I know its childish, I don't care).
