Live debates or discussion, I think, would give RevLeft a better sense of community. Of course, as Marxists, communists, etc. I can understand about not going public, although there are several here who identify themselves by name and location (well, a few.)

Just a thought.

You can link a Skype-username to your profile.
About the live debates I don't think many will do that.

Live debates seem cool, but I doubt you would understand my accent.

I think Skype is very acceptable for the "Language study group" and in less degree for theoretical discussions since it is better 7 times to think before once to speak. But positive moment is the more action / more information in a time unit. Negative side is exception of many not native english speakers, for example such as me. Though the idea is quite good for not more than 3-5 persons otherwise problems with sound could be possible.

The live group "OKO" in Skype was created a few years ago by ASM (A.S.Michurin) but it is unactive now because of lack of members (the "OKO" is interpreted as "the Society of Communist Relations" or in Russian - "Общество Коммунистических Отношений").

neat idea, but as someone whos been around I have to say Skype can be dangerous, your voice can be recorded and if released on the internet is like having a video made public, people can identify you that is why they do voiceovers on many tv news shows. It is not like IM, IRC or revleft. You are very exposed. perhaps not as extreme as facebook, but dangerous nevertheless.

I'd do it. Maybe not voice chat, but I'd join a Revleft group IM on Skype.
My Skype name is on my profile, which might have been a mistake as I get a bunch of random friend requests from people who are named stuff like "Enver Hoxha Forever" "Hoxha Lives" etc.

What is it: " a Revleft group IM on Skype."?

You all wish you would be lucky enough to see my beautiful face.

On the real though, please be mindful of proper security culture.

I don't think this is a particularly good idea...

I agree with Lizard King. If there's a way that some of us can watch the debates/discussions, that would be cool

Seriously guys, security culture.

This will just end up with you being the laughing stock of 4chan for years to come, and a spot in the hall of fame on Redwatch whcih you'll have to deal with your entire lives.

I would hope this goes without saying, but if a stranger on the internet wants to Skype with you, you should say no, y'know don't talk to strangers and all that jazz. And even if its somebody from revleft or something, take steps to protect your identity, like wear a mask or something.

Or, I dunno, don't Skype with weirdos on the internets.

Don't be such a prude man, just leave the politics out of it. Keep the masks though.

I'd honestly enjoy such a thing, and think it would be quite beneficial, because it would allow real-time Q and A.
About privacy, I don't see why people couldn't just disable their webcams for such a discussion, or wear masks. About voice recordings, I don't understand what value such a thing would have, but there is free voice changing software out there.

I'm interested in it but not as debates, rather as Q&A dialog between two Alex. If a few listeners would have appeared, I could ask comrade ASM to answer some popular questions I would choose in Revlet forums. (for information: ASM - Alex.S.Michurin, who is learning marxism during more than 40 years, who fights against anti-scientific interpretation of marxism and its the most often met phenomenon - stalinism aka duhring-ism). Unfortunately comrade ASM doesn't speak English so comrades who know Russian could be invited. I have no Premium Skype so 'video' is unpossible as well.

I'd be interested in observing, and possibly adding my own voice to the discussion depending on whether I feel I can contribute to the topic in question.

As for security culture, if you really wanna make sure you're safe, then don't take part. For myself, I'm not worried about anyone recording me and then releasing that recording into the public domain - why should I be?

Why should I give a fuck about 4chan? Or even Redwatch, come to mention it, since their bark seems to be worse than their bite.
