MC5?!?!?!? THey were a great rock band but I don't recall them doing hip hop, plus they were long gone before any real hip hop movement started.
You can read more about the MC5, one of the great rock bands to come out of the US, here:

I hear the word classic thrown around too much.
That being said, here's another classic:

Hey folks, you guys forget some very important one.
Tupac.
Get his first album 2pacalypse. The much anti-government album ever made.
A quote from "Violent" - They claim that i'm violent, but i just refuse to be silent.

Another thing,
Hiphop today sux. I get all new records of Def Jam free. And always wondering where is the good rap, where are the good lyrics. Most hiphop these days is all about being gangsta is cool. Good hiphop these days comes from Africa, like Senegal.

From Tupac check out:
Letter to the President, Holla at Me, Life Goes On, Nothing to Lose, Starin at the World Thru My Rearview, Dear Momma, Changes, Hell Razor, White Mans World, Only God can Judge Me, Can't C Me, All Out, Me Against the World, Hold ya Head.

I've said it before and I'll say it again:
Michael Franti & Spearhead, also his old band Disposable Heroes of Hiphopricy, no BS gangsta fronting or bling bling bullshit, no misogyny either.
http://www.spearheadvibrations.com/index.htm
Steve Zearle is cool too: www.zearle.com
and don't forget the best Palestinian hip hop, the Iron Shiek: http://www.ironsheik.biz/
If you are looking for party music don't bother with these if you want good political stuff then don't pass them up.
Oh and Robbie Bee & the Boyz from the Rez, had some great Natie American hip hop.
Marxman had an Irish thing going on.
Dead Prez and Public Enemy are great too but you already knew that .

Aside from the others listed here The Last Emporer, Pharoahe Monch, Delinquent Habits, and Black Eyed Peas (even though they kind of sold out when they started doing soda commercials) are all good. Damian Marley is good too, but that's only if you like dance hall.

The Sweatshop Union
And swedish ;)
Timbuktu
Advance Patrol
Loop Troop (sings mostly in english but some in swedish because they are)
MBMA "mobbade barn med automatvapen"
Don Diego
Fjärde Världen
Fattaru
Thats it.. there is much more, but Im have kind of a mellow brain right now

To Inti's latin list I would also add two albums that came out of Spain this year, they are collections with many artists and I would say a great starting point for someone who likes an international flavour to their hip hop, trust me, you dont need the lingo to dig these mothers....
Barcalona zona bastarda & Hip Hop Labatorio

Or at least download Through the Wire and Slow Jams.

As far as political hiphop, dead prez is the best current group in my opinion. A lot of political hip hop just isn't my style because it's more spiritual or easy-going, but Dead Prez bring me back to being a kid and hearing Public Enemy for the first time... or even Dead Kennedys for the first time.
Mr. Lef is also good political hip hop.
Blackalicious is good old-schoolish hip hop. Del tha Funkee Homosapien is good alternative Hip hop.
Along similar lines, "A prince amung thieves" by Prince Paul is the best alt hip hop album I've heard in a while. It's a concept gangsta album (sounds wierd but it works) and so there's all these different rappers playing different reoccouring characters... there's a song with that guy from House of pain where he's rapping about how tough he is and how he'll kill anyone who gets in his way and his charcater is a member of the NYPD.
ODB has the best and most original style out there as far as flow is concerned, but his lyrics are incredably homophobic and sexist. ... but what the hell, you can like an artist for his/her art and not his/her politics ... it's just nice when the two coincide.
