View Full Version : Tips on feeling less hungry
Sup, y'all.
I've just been kicked off my education (will still be able to take exams this year though) which means I no longer have any income. Add to this that I had some debt I had to pay off from last month, and we arrive at the fact that I can afford one 400-500g meal of rice/pasta/potatoes and ketchup every two days until next month.
If any of y'all have any experience with going hungry for long periods of time, do you have any tips on feeling less famished than I actually am? Alternately, does anyone know where I would be able to get a free meal in Copenhagen? I could beg from my friends and parents, but I'm not that desperate yet.
Thanks in advance.

Stomaches expand and contract, so if you are used to eating a lot your stomach has expanded a bit therefore after a while of eating less you will become less hunger because your stomach has contracted.
If you can't afford food you could try skipping/dumpster diving in the dumpsters behind supermarkets. Food is well edible if it has expired one day, and you could fish these foods and, if wrapped in plastic, are perfectly edible (otherwise cleanable). Dumpster diving may be illegal though, so check the law or watch out for cops.

EDIT: Though, if you are not desperate enough to beg your friends or parents, you are probably not be desperate enough for skipping either.

Tea is an appetite suppresant, or so I hear. Drink a cup or two a day, or when you feel hungry.
Not only that, tea is awesome and delicious.

Though it would probably work against you, when you are physically active you are less inclined to eat.I know when I and my family work out we have to wait some time before eating our next meal because the workout makes us not want to eat (though this would just cause you to loose weight and probably isn't recommended).
Find foods high in protein like beef jerky, meats and peanut butter;if anyone asks you if tehy can buy you anything ask for such kind of foods. When I was at occupy and didn't know where my next meal was coming from I survived on these foods.

plenty of beans and pulses can be dirt cheap and are full of protein.

Stimulants and opiates are appetite supressents. Try coffee. Also the dumpster diving is good advice. Where I'm at they sell food at the convenience store for 24 hours. One minute after that- in the dumpster. What a waste. Obviously it is still good.

Isnt there a food not bombs collective around ungdumshuset? Anyways I'm sure that if you volunteer to peel/cut vegetables or do the dishes at the voku there or at Christiania you'll get a free meal... at least that's how voku's here and in Germany work...
Edit: here is the email adres of the ungdomshuset kitchen collective:
[email protected] although you can probably better just pas by on a day that they are cooking.
Learning how to cook cheap healthy meals for large groups is a valuable skill to acquire and if you have the time and get fed in the process why not go and volunteer there?
Edit2: here is some old contact info for food not bombs Denmark http://www.foodnotbombs.net/DENMARK.html

Instead of starving yourself apply for food stamps and visit places like food not bombs hell maybe even join them. And of course buy lentils, beans, and other good stuff which is generally pretty cheap.

3 square meals a day, what ever it is (try semi-healthy atleast) By like fruit and nut bags, usually dirt cheap and can be quite tasty. Eat this when you feel nippish.

Water and sleep man. Maybe look into growing wheat grass or something, very easy to grow and maintain and extremely good for you.

I hear meth and heroin are good distractions from hunger. If it's your first time, you might be able to get a free fix from your local street pharmacist.
In all seriousness though, try not to exert a lot of energy for the next month.

I wouldn't recommend this, personnally

That's pretty good advice, actually, wonder why I didn't think of that before. And shit man, I'll dumpster dive for all my meals for years before I go begging from people I love.

Sadly there's no food stamp program in Denmark, otherwise also good advice that I might not have thought of. Thanks.

Sadly I don't have any turf to grow stuff on (live in a fourth-floor apartment), but appreciate it.

That's great advice if I'd written I can afford 3 square meals a day and little snacks to keep me going. The thread's about keeping away hunger pangs, not how to gain weight quickly - if you misunderstood it as such, I guess I appreciate the sentiment.
I'm sure he can spend the money he would on cigarettes, on food or something instead.
Don't count on it.
Also am I reading it right when I'm figuring protein is the most important part? Like, that's what'll keep me full the longest? Really appreciate y'all helping me out here.

throw some hot sauce on that shit
Look at what cultures are known for their prevalence of spicy foods: primarily ones that have historically had major problems with widespread hunger. While the use of spices most likely originated as a means to mask the taste of bad/rotten food, it also has the added benefit of killing ones appetite.

Hot drinks are good for hunger, fizzy pop, anything containing caffeine, keeping well hydrated. I eat just before bed so that hunger pains and my tummy rumbling don't keep me awake as much. Also I find that not eating breakfast makes me less hungry.
On the other hand, lentils, beans, rice, etc are very cheap to buy and reasonably healthy and filling.

Buy rice and bananas, and drink lots of water, helps a lot.
Go to the burger king, mcdonalds or something, people always leave unfinished sandwiches, you can be fast and grab some. Also soda refills at BK.
Free samples at supermarkets are also awesome, eat a lot and get out quick or you might get some shit, but nothing serious.
And if it's a big chain, like wall mart, I wouldn't feel guilty about taking some pasta or rice... or anything. Don't know about safety though.
Good luck comrade, and report in so we know you're all right.
I went 2 days without eating on prescribed Adderall (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adderall), and still wasn't hungry (I had to force myself to eat).
I imagine such a drug is illegal, though. The recreational street drug by the name of "Speed" is the same shit (I wouldn't recommend that though, lol).
If it's not been brought up yet, try Oatmeal. It fills you up.

Wish I could offer more advice but sadly my knowledge is limited. I would say off the top of my head, to look out for deals are your grocery mart. Try to wait until a day that has good bargains before you go shopping. Also I would suggest completely skipping breakfast; I know it is the most important meal in the day, but frankly I skip it most mornings without noticing.
Most importantly (only if you smoke, don't start just for this) smoke your day away. On a day that I have 10$ only, I either buy two cheap 5$ meals over the course of the day or a pack. I bet its not hard to guess which one usually wins out. Smoking is the best appetite suppressant that I know. But roll your own, definitely don't go wasting your little money on packs.

I've found that drinking a lot of water and doing physical activity will kill an appetite. However if you're hungry and find you don't have the strength to exercise, then I'd ask someone for help.

Pasta with salt and pepper taste awsome when hungry. Also try craigslist as they have a freebie section there that advertises for people to come and pick up fruit from their trees for free.

No, but seriously water usually helps me stave off hunger pangs. But I've never been on a limited diet in that sense (just cheap but abundant ones lol). I also aint too proud to beg, but

It seems really odd to me that a couple people here have recommended working out... When I get done running or working out, I am mthrfcking ravenous, and I thought that was the case with most people?
But yeah, I would second the caffeine suggestion. It is an appetite suppressant. Its usually not too hard to sniff out some free coffee, either.

If I was still town in Malmö, I would've taken the train over and brought you some food, man. There's been some solid advice in this thread so I don't have much more to add. Take care.

The only issue with caffeine is that apparently in some people it can trigger an insulin response that makes you hungry (makes me hungry usually during the crash) though also some say it doesn't really do this and you're just noticing how hungry you are during the crash cause you skipped meals and are crashing/coming down off of the appetite suppressant affects of it so your body is in panic mode to get food which I guess is why I get super hungry instead of just 'time to eat' during the crash.

Also I find that not eating breakfast makes me less hungry.this. not eating breakfast is one of the major causes of weight gain, because breakfast kickstarts your metabolism. so if you don't eat breakfast then your metabolism will go slower, so you won't get as hungry (this is only a good idea if you actually can't afford food).
anyway, cigarettes cost substantially more than enough ramen to last you for a month, at least in america. so if you have ramen in your country then buy that and cut down on smoking cigarettes if you're a smoker.

Rice cakes are great for this, and they're dirt cheap. I used to snack on them when I used to cut weight for wrestling. Popcorn works too. These things don't give you shit in regards to nutrition but they make you feel better when not eating. The best thing is that they are cheap.

Avoid anything sweet. Sweet foods can be tempting and cheap, but they push your insulin way up (especially if you're eating less anyway), which winds up giving you cravings, even when your stomach isn't empty.
Drinking water makes you feel full for a few minutes, but mashing food into the water to make a soup makes it stay in the stomach for much longer. I once knew a man who lived on bread soaked in water for a month. Not pleasant, but it worked.
Not sure if they have them in the grocery stores where you're at but here there are bags of root vegetables called "stew packs" which are cheap (usually around $3.50 canadian dollars). If you can get these and some canned broth you'll be able to eat off of it for about a week if you're down to one meal a day. Take spices from restaurants. Also try and score a fishing rod (swipe one from wal-mart if you gotta). Sitting around waiting for a fish to bite doesn't burn many calories, it's relaxing (you're going to be pretty pissy with vitamin and protein deficiency) and if you catch one you're laughing.

Don't even need a rod. Just a line, a hook and an empty can to roll the line around.

Don't eat ramen as is, it's just salt. Boil some carrots or something and then cook ramen with them. But plain ramen is just salt, probably better off not eating than only eating ramen.

1. Dumpster dive. Seriously, I've lived off of what grocery stores and pharmacies throw out for months at a time. "Best Before" doesn't mean "Bad After".
2. Food banks.
3. Five fingers.
4. Food Not Bombs. If there isn't a chapter in your city, start one! With a nice pamphlet explaining what Food Not Bombs is, you can approach small grocery stores, farmers at your local farmers market, and be like, "Hey gimme some food please, Ima redistribute it!" On one hand, it means following through on taking on Food Not Bombs, but it can mean a free meal or two a week (sometimes more if the food is living at your house, and "won't make it 'til the serving").
5. Art Openings. Hell, not only is there all cheese you can eat, but you can walk out with a bottle of wine if you're lucky. Hell, a few years ago (I don't drink any more), I wandered in to a vernisage (what artists call art openings, evidently), managed to eat my fill, drink a bottle of champagne, and fuck in an unlocked back room.

last time i was homeless, (houseless really, if you've got friends you're never "homeless") my friends and i got in good with a bicycle pizza delivery guy who worked a block down from where we hung out, and at the end of his shift he'd bring four or five pizzas and give em to us free. we'd always tip him out of our "spare change, please" fund, and he'd hang with us for a while and partake of our booze (since our food was taken care of, our spare change went towards coffee in the morning, and booze at night, and rail passes to get from the squat to our spot) so maybe try and see if there's any deliver joints nearby with cool people working.

There's really no way of getting around the empty hurt feeling of being hungry however I've found that if you drink large amounts of water (which you can get free water basically anywhere especially if you keep a spare bottle around for such purposes), it fills the stomach so it hurts less. Smoking also helps. How I deal with it. Oh and stealing.

Meditation can be quite good for helping you deal with the pain, I don't know about any enlightenment or whatever but it does help clear your head.
If you are near any wildish areas, you can collect nettles and boil them up into soup and there'll be blackberries and stuff around this time of year. Apples too if you're really lucky. Unleash your hunter-gatherer instincts
