i just found out that my uncle was invovled in the 1956 Hungarian revolution for freedom from russia. he read about it while at university in cape town (my mums family lived in south africa) and worked on a boat greasin' engines to london. he hitch hiked across europe and joined up with the revolutionaries. he earnt abit of money writing articles about the struggle for the obsever (a british rag), but he had to return to south africa to continue his education, and the revolution failed anyway!

My dad defected from socialist Hungary in the late 60's.He was 11 when the revolution happend. He saw it,he watched it,he observed it.It was nonsense.Thats my opinoin.A bunch of revisionist idiots attempting to uprise.Khrushchev was right to suppress it.

This was not self-determination precisely, moving away from the USSR would mean you become a target for the U.S. imperialists. It takes a strong political movement to achieve independence. In this case the revolution did not mean very much except to change sides and weaken the USSR, the USSR ultimately being a favourable power when compared with the U.S.

Neither Washington nor Moscow. Hungary should have been another Spain, with troops from all over the world waving the red banner. Just maybe we could have played the USA off the USSR for some for of real self determination. Unfortunately Kruschev commanded too much respect in the world revolutionary movement.

That awesome that your grandfather did that. The funny thing is that he was fighting against the USSR which had the same ideals that Che Guevara actaully had.

Not really, Che would have to be a loser to actually believe in the Soviet ideals. The only reason Cuba ever had relations with the USSR, was to protect itself. And Cuba wasn't ever a puppet of the Soviet Union, like certain other countries. Castro's actions in Latin America, and Che's in Africa were there own, not the ideals of the imperialists running the Soviet Union. It is much to be lamented that Cuba ever had to rely on the tyrants of the Soviet Union.
