[UPDATE: as of late this morning, Occupy Canada quietly altered the caption on the photo (which doesn't update those that shared it) to reflect a more accurate version of events. unfortunately, it has already been shared 20,000+ times as if it means something else.]

Soooo, after seeing this photo posted all over FB yesterday (as of right now, it's been shared over 19,000x), I think it's really important to clarify what it means.

If you're wondering why the supposed mass exodus of police in Frankfurt "taking off their helmets and joining the protest" isn't making the news at all, you're not alone. After seeing the photo circulating, and admittedly being a bit touched at the possibility that it was true, I did some *very* minimal digging and found just the opposite.

Throughout Blockupy Frankfurt, some riot cops have been allowed to take off their helmets, for example when they are escorting protestors through the streets, as bike cops do here in Canada (they either wear bike helmets, or baseball caps). But this doesn't mean they've "taken off their badges" and "joined the protest" as a caption on a picture circulating around FB seems to suggest. If you google around and look for photos of BF, you will see almost every news story seems to have a photo of riot cops doing their job with their helmets off (but still fully armed and ready to react at a moment's notice). After seeing that, I decided to dig around some more, starting with the photo post itself. Occupy Canada (which has often spread a "pro-police" message) posted a series of links to news stories which supposedly "confirm" and "verify" (their words) the content of the photo. Yes, the photo is used in the stories, but the caption merely states that cops are "escorting" protestors (as cops often do), and the news stories don't mention police joining in AT ALL. In fact, each story has a quote like this:

"Police on Friday temporarily detained some 400 demonstrators during unauthorized Blockupy protests by thousands of activists after they erected barricades and staged sit-ins.

Some 5,000 police officers are assigned to keep the weekend protests in check."

Does that sound like "joining in the protest" to you?

I dug a bit further into the photo comment thread. Many commenters from Germany have tried to clarify the situation, but their comments have been buried by comments from North American folks saying "Golly, isn't this great!". Here's a typical comment:

"- i am from berlin and took part in the blockupy protests in frankfurt. theses police guys were allowed to take off their helmets by their officer, others weren't. they didn't join the protest, neither did they clear the road for us. what you see here is a very typical strategy of german riot police: they took care that we stayed with the registered route and don't camp, if we had tried to break out to go another way they would have used their power for it. don't underestimate the brainwash that is done to these people. - though, in many faces of these mostly young police men and police women you could read how uncomfortable and wrong they felt. still many of them would just follow their order, not realizing that they don't have to follow the orders if it is against human rights, the law or their own dignity."

So, with that presented, decide for yourself. I call bullshit.

Did Occupy Canada spread misinformation intentionally? I don't know. However, if they had read the articles that supposedly "confirm and verify" the account in their caption, they would find zero evidence to support their claim. The original poster (someone named Derek) did use the photo as an opportunity to plug his youtube channel though. Did he contact AP Photographer Michael Probst to ask him? That would be one good way of getting some more info.

As a photographer, I firmly believe that photos don't lie (but the caption I added is eye catching, right? exactly...). Still, context (and captions) can be infinitely manipulated for all kinds of fucked up reasons, in all kinds of fucked up ways.

Finding out more information to decipher the meaning of the photo honestly took me about 5 minutes. Yes, this is significantly longer than it takes to click "share," and writing this post has taken even longer than that. But I'm obsessed with media literacy, and I'm seeing way too many smart people spreading misinformation to just be silent.

PLEASE do some digging before sharing misleading photos. Use yr critical thinking skills and ALWAYS be critical of the media, especially when that media is facebook. If you see a photo whose meaning is ambiguous or can be manipulated, ask a few questions and look around for more information. It takes a bit longer, but at least you're not participating in a lie.

If it was a potato cannon it would have recoil (which from the pictures we can see is not the case since it is just a tube with both ends open), and wouldn't be firing actual rockets.

Rocket launchers in general function on lighting the rocket with an electrical signal. Judging by some of the pictures I have seen I am guessing they used some form of solid propellent and lit it by way of electrical charge. Probably using the same principal as the original "Bazooka" with a small battery used to trigger it. The propellent was probably easy for them to find/make considering they were miners and have access to explosives.

Emmet Till was 14 year old boy who was murdered after reportedly flirting with a white girl. Till was from Chicago, Illinois, visiting his relatives in the Mississippi Delta region when he spoke to 21-year-old Carolyn Bryant, the married proprietor of a small grocery store. Several nights later, Bryant's husband Roy and his half-brother J. W. Milam arrived at Till's great-uncle's house where they took Till, transported him to a barn, beat him and gouged out one of his eyes, before shooting him through the head and disposing of his body in the Tallahatchie River, weighing the body down with a 70 lb (32 kg) cotton gin fan tied around his neck with barbed wire. His body was discovered and retrieved from the river three days later.

Emmet's mother insisted on a public funeral service with an open casket to show the world the brutality of the killing. Tens of thousands attended his funeral. Images of his mutilated body were published in magazines and newspapers.

This is the writing on a monument dedicated to the Yugoslav Partisans who died at the Battle of Neretva in 1943. The plaque has a quote from Josip Broz Tito that says "We must not leave the wounded behind". It looks like the pyramids or a roman colassium, a magnificient and boisterous construct built by slaves

But I do like the roman style architecture, it is a nice building no doubt.

I do not quite understand what you mean in regards to the "fascist rules" not allowing you to post. If you cannot post up a picture than you need more post; last I checked it was around 25 posts to post up links and such.

In adition to my earlier post about Ducth Carnaval (http://www.revleft.com/vb/your-favorite-political-t171310/index.html?p=2577203#post2577203), today's newspaper contained an article about censorship.

Monday (during the carnaval-parade on 'Rosenmontag') one of the cars was censored by Dutch police because they thought it's texts went to far.
It compared the police with traitors to their country.
As i read it it struck me; it must have been the one on the lower picture in my post.

Roughly translated it says: "No honor or ambition, be a traitor with the police"
