I've been before but not for a long term period of time. While there I'll be working on my TORFL and I know it's important to speak Russian but otherwise does anyone have any advice for me? Or, anyone have any questions you'd like me to try to get answers for? I'm working on acquiring access to some archives which would just be damn amazing.

Lemme know! Spasiba comrades. :)

If you are going to do any political work read up on your anti-fascism...

Yes, please be careful. The neo-Nazi movement there is bigger than ever.

I actually heard that it decreased in size in recent years due to the militant anti-fascist movement.

I'll gladly try to help you, but what kind of advice you want? "Does anyone have any advice for me?" is a quite broad question...

True, but there were still over 150 racist/immigration attacks last year.

In other words, it's best to stay the fuck away from Russia unless your a Nazi....

Seems like Russia is slowly becoming a Nazi haven, what is the likelihood of a Nazi/Fascist regime popping up in there?

I have to agree. Russia has a huge crime problem. I used to work with a guy from Russia, and he said that in Moscow if someone comes up to you asking for a cigarette, or the time, etc. you should run. The muggings and assaults there have reached alarming levels, and forget about going there if you're not white - you're almost guaranteed to get beat up or even killed by racists.

How so? I think what I meant "Unless If your happen to be a Nazi" which is a usual figure of speech and I wasn't actually calling Robespierres Neck a Nazi within that context I was trying to use. Of course I can delete it if anyone finds it offensive.

Well yeah there is a quite a big racism problem but there's a lot more to Russia than the neo-Nazi presence there and you shouldn't let it define your view of the place or judge it solely based on that, in many ways it's a fascinating country and well worth visiting

the nazi movement in russia exists but is being exaggerated. the reason that there is a lot of hate crime and racist attacks in russia has more to do with russia being an overall racist shithole than because of organized fascism.

where in russia do you want to go?

I lived in Moscow for several years in the late 90s.

What do you want to do there? If you can get access to the Lenin Library, cool!

Don't know about conditions now. I'd concur with others-high crime rate, stay far away from the police-they are the worst thugs.Anti-semitism and racism is high.

Boris Kagarlitsky can help get one up to speed on current struggles there.

Its in Russian but Google translate will help.

There are a group of activists in Petrograd who are working to revive the historic memory of the early Soviet period. They sound interesting.

Crime is in every single country, I think western propaganda painted too harsh picture about Russia and why on hell people are scared to go. Many my friends still going to Russia to visit families as myself family members living in Leningrad I got stories that better than Baltic States life and many migrate to Russia.

Which archives of what? I'd really be interested in knowing, unless of course there's good reason for it to be confidential.

I hate to call you out on this (not really, just being polite) but it's very foolish to blame some mysterious propaganda for what is a cultural phenomenon -- in the context of Russia or anywhere / anything. Around the time period of the cold war, I'd agree for certain that many American (negative) views on Russia were rooted in propaganda, but I'd not go so far as to say that's still the case. I've never seen any documentation, read any newspaper, heard any radio broadcast or watched any television programming recently that would classify, in my view, as Russophobic while simultaneously being state-sponsored.
