obviously the viewpoint that british politics are being tainted by american influence is bourgeois as shit, but out of curiosity, what is the general attitude in british politics about "americanization"? who is concerned about it, what does the left say about it, etc?

Even among liberals, American politics are generally looked down on as worse than that of Europe. The ineffectiveness of the presidential system, the GOP, the lack of a type of universal healthcare system.

Just watch any GOP primary debate and you'll understand why so many Europeans don't want their political systems to be anything more like the American one.

you can say that again.... maybe the media is seriously manipulating the political climate in the usa....cos it certainly looks pretty mind-numbingly bad...
clips of political figures at rallys and meetings... spouting one meaningless, empty sound-bite after another... with a measured pause for applause... so contrived.......and the worst thing is there seems no shortage of audience cheering and neighing and honking... like idiots... for things like no health care and no government .. or very little... all so the great american public can choose to be ill, indebted, homeless and shot dead.
it really doesnt do you any favours.... and the whole presidential, personality thing... doesnt help.... mostly it is the tone the politicians use ... as if everyone was 4 years old and of such low cranial capacity..... it is so insulting... but we, well i , have to conclude that is what is required to get elected.

You want to know why most americans today are still so passive and so apathetic even in this 2012 that even according to the Maya Predictions and many intellectuals this year is supposed to be not the end of the world like many people think, but the end of stupidity and dumbness and the begining of a more scientific mankind, a more rational and better well-read and well-informed humankind.

But the thing is that the year 2012 caught up most americans real late, while sleeping at the driving wheels. Because most american joes and janes stayed away from politics for so many decades, because of the fact that there was no economic need really for most americans to be really worried about politics and economics. The US oligarchic-imperialist-welfare economic model was a little bit some years ago like the European welfare-regulated capitalisms, in which most people in USA had work, food on their table, and a relatively peaceful life, even though USA was still oligarchic at least the USA had a benevolent industrial welfare regulated capitalist system that provided food and pleasures for the majority of people.

But not anymore, because the economic system of today post-9-11, has turned into an evil unbearable form of *neoliberalism* oligarchic dictatorship, with deeper and stronger concentration of wealth in a few, and less weflare programs, and with US government privatizing US government-corporations, that means that we are heading toward a USA with a lot less economic stability for lower classes of America.

It is time for Americans to wake up, and stop being so dumb, so apathetic, and dump the Zionist Blue-Dog Democrats and the Zionist neocons Republicans and look toward the third party options like Jerry White of The Socialist Equality Party, The Green Party, The Freedom Road Socialist Party, or Stewart Alexander of the socialist party of USA. Or any other third populist anti-war party

Oh yeah, i forgot to add something, damn how the hell could I miss and forget the mind-manipulating effect of the media in USA. The capitalist media of the most powerful 7 TV news channels of the USA control the voting tastes of the great majority of the US voting population. These 7 capitalist TV news channels are CNN news, FOX news, ABC news, CBS news, NBC news, Noticiero Univision and Noticias Telemundo

I think that the only way that we can really see americans digesting and welcoming socialism as a better system than capitalism in elections, is a day when those 7 capitalist TV news channels lose their hegemony and power, and be replaced by more progressive options in ratings like The Russia Today News Network which are already offered in Dish Network and Direct TV and in other corporations. And Democracy Now. But since most americans still have a trust-based worldview and not an evidence-reason thinking, it will take a little bit of time until most americans get to quit watching those 7 capitalist TV channels, and instead rely on internet news, and in alternative progressive TV news channels like Democracy Now, Link TV, and The Russia Today News Network.

The article is poorly written but it's not altogether incorrect.

In 1994 Tony Blair went off to America to learn how to win an election from the Clinton administration. He basically turned the Labour party into a carbon copy of the democrats, abandoning any pretensions of their social democratic history in favour of American liberalism. Blair today describes himself as that most American of terms a progressive. You have to understand that 10 years earlier the labour party had set about expelling the militant section of the labour party who later went on to form SPEW. They did this because militant had become a considerable strength within the party and a threat to the leadership. Now of course it's all still capitalism but just because it's bourgeois politics doesn't mean that we should just flippantly disregard this as a matter of no consequence. So the left, which I don't consider my politics to be a part of, should rightly be pissed about their politics becoming completely consigned to failure in the eyes of the general population. This policy shift and expulsions from Labour did almost as much to discredit the name of socialism in the UK as the soviet union had. It signalled a complete change from having a party of the right and a party of the left to a competition for the middle ground as you have in the US, although the middle ground had also been shifted further to the right. In the late 60's for example the conservatives calling for nationalization, today Labour would be roundly mocked as extremists if they suggested the same. The policy was now don't bother trying to appeal to the working class as they don't vote, but instead to focus on the battle for the middle classes. The reason for the defeat of the old left and shift to the right had come about due to the close ideological similarities between Thatcher and Reagan and their electoral success. Thatcherism being synonymous with Reaganomics. Today you have groups like UKIP and others vying to become the UK's version of the Tea party, something they freely admit and want to be influenced by.
The Americanisation of the UK started in the corporate world with the adoption of American corporate mentality. What I mean by this is the sterile "Have a Nice Day" mentality and the adoption of meaningless jargon within the business world. You then had the greater segregation of people according to their ethnicities and much further concentration on identity politics, which had been seen as an American problem. Thankfully we're still not as bad on that front, as illustrated by the title of this thread. However it's getting considerably worse, I was at a friends house the other day where his 16 year old brother was shouting into his X-Box "You Jew, You fucking Jew" mimicking the little American shit weasel on the other end. This type of casual racism would have been completely bizarre 10+ years ago when we were his age. But is what I've heard constantly from Americans previously on the same medium.

Essentially though the reason for this cultural absorption is from the British bourgeois, who are dependant on the American state for sustained profits and to protect what they already have. The British state benefits from London being the home of American banking in Europe through which the American bourgeois does most of it's European business. This shouldn't be thought of as America imposing cultural imperialism on Britain but rather the British bourgeois sometimes consciously sometimes unconsciously admiring the way the American bourgeois do business and adopting there methods which then filters through to the rest of society. You know what they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Personally I don't really think it's much of an issue, apart from the racial segregation stuff and identity politics which must be opposed vigorously. But I think the working class are justified to have a little grumble about it now and again. It's better than them moaning about Europe trying to straighten our bananas or Brussels trying to call cider apple wine. Both of those are considered much more as problems than Americanisation.

If you started rambling about 2012 Mayan Calendar conspiracy quack rubbish, like "Trotskist Marxist" did in his post, we would perhaps have to consider that you were, a troll. Right now, I'd say you just write in a strange way, which is somewhat charming if hard to follow at times.

I've always had a creeping suspicion of this...although I remember that in the case of Italy if a left-wing Italian brought up the subject of the US voting for Bush twice you can mention (besides that you didn't vote for that dumbfuck) that Italy had Berlusconi for even longer so they're not in a position to brag about anything.

Ever since I moved from Puerto Rico, a US colony with a different political mindset, into the US I've been quite disturbed and sicken by the political discourse here. Relative to European/Canadian framework, it seems that mainstream politics in the US is way more rightist. We have a soft right Democrat party and a hard right boderlining into far-right Republican party. The radio/TV voices all sorts of shit, some being thinly veiled far-right stuff, as if this was normal political discourse rather than fringe. Although I've really seen some posts here that show that the mainstream right in the UK also has it's peculiar strongly classist kookiness that the US doesn't have.

I don't have any illusions that Canada is any better than the US, after all like Comrade Commistar said they're all capitalist, but at least the political discourse in Canada seems to be more 'normal' (less infuriating, outrageous, annoying) than that of the US plus they have national health care so if I could I would immigrate out of the US.

You see its actually a clever ploy, if the American workers read Karl Marx 24 hrs/day then its like they'll be going on a permanent general strike.
And you can take a shit while reading and eat the pages of Karl Marx that you've already read.
