It was actually the standard background on my macbook.. but the universe is just too fucking awesome, so I haven't changed it.
It also reminds me of our inevitable doom from which we most likely won't escape... andromeda will collide with the milky way.

Your computer runs OS X Lion by any chance? As that is the default wallpaper.
Anyway, my desktop right now is green stuff. I like green stuff as that gives the idea of "freshness" for lack of a better word. Especially in winter months, when everything is dark and raw, I like it doubly so.

I used to have OpenBox fixed to look just like that, minus the widgets (unless you count conky). Never seen KDE customized to look like that, it looks good. I'm always stuck with the mental image of 2003-ish KDE of clunky, nasty win95 clone. I've only ever really used awesome/Openbox/Fluxbox, though.
What distro are you using?

Nice. I used Gentoo for a little while, but I've always had second hand / hand-me-down computers, so everything took fucking forever to compile. I got frustrated and got rid of it. Been using Arch full time since then, though I've had it on at least a spare computer for fuckin forever (since like 0.6)

Yeah, Arch isn't too bad either. But Gentoo gives more flexibility and freedom, which is what it is all about. For example, I'm currently looking into building Gentoo within OS X (http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/gentoo-alt/prefix/bootstrap-macos.xml) (I work 40 hours a week with OS X machines, might as well have some fun with it ;) ).
I ran (K)Ubuntu for the last few years on my laptop, but since I got this new (as it so happens also second-hand) laptop machine I got several issues with it and on other binary distro's (didn't try Arch though). So I gave Gentoo another try and it just works marvelously :)
Note to others: Gentoo expects you to read (well written) documentation and not to panic when something breaks. So it is not for the faintly hearted or those expecting stuff to Just Work. You may look into Ubuntu for that.

I will finally be able to afford to build myself a decent computer here soon, I may look into going back to Gentoo then ... until a year or so ago I was working with a 900Mhz Athlon desktop and a 1.4Ghz Celeron laptop. Imagine the compile times on that Athlon, haha. Shit, the laptop, too!

I don't have to imagine, I know: My first machine I put Gentoo on (back in 2004) had a 700MHz Thunderbird in it.
Good old days.
Now I'm on a stellar (in comparison) Studio 1555 (http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/dell-studio-1555-15/4507-3121_7-33712907.html).
